TIME TO SAY THANKS

This week is National Volunteer Week and we would like to extend a special thank you to the many volunteers who work so tirelessly across our shire.

They give so much, and we are so grateful for everything they do to make our community the great place that it is.

Emerging from last year’s lockdowns, volunteer groups across Mitchell have sprung into action however, many have reported a shortage of new volunteers to replace those retiring.

With support from the Victorian Government, we've launched a one-stop-shop website to help potential volunteers find local opportunities.

WORKS CONTINUE Windham Street, Wallan

The stage one works at Windham Street, between William and King streets, Wallan, continue to progress.

Construction crews will move to the road edges early next week as most of the new drainage for the road has been built. New footpaths are under construction to create a safer, more connected Windham Street for those walking or riding through Wallan.

The work zone is reduced to 40km during construction. The north-bound lane is closed with a detour along Bentinck Street.

The transformation is to support safer movement through the area as part of Council’s $620,000 capital works.

REDUCING FUEL LOADS Rail Street, Wandong

We’ve been working closely with ARTC and VLine to reduce fuel loads along the rail corridor between Heathcote Junction and Wandong.

The most recent works included the removal of noxious weeds, identified dangerous trees and selected vegetation. These works were completed on Wednesday 12 May.

As a result, the fuel loads have been reduced significantly and where trees or branches were removed, hollows were put in to keep an environmental balance.

Council would like to thank Safer Together for funding this important project.

Monday 17 May was International Day against Homophobia, Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

To mark IDAHOBIT, Council raised a Rainbow Pride Flag at the Broadford Customer and Library Service Centre. Community members joined us for a short ceremony and free coffee with some our local GLLOs (Victoria Police lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer liaison officers).

PLAN FOR CATS, DOGS Responsible pet ownership

We're developing a new Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) and we want to know how you think we can better manage dogs and cats in our shire.

The DAMP aims to promote responsible pet ownership within the community and covers everything from minimising dog attacks to encouraging people to register and microchip cats and dogs.

Domestic Animal Management Plans are legislated and must be developed and renewed every four years by all Councils across Victoria

ROAD RENAMING Parker Court, Seymour

We're proposing to rename Parker Court in Seymour to Parker Drive.

This change has been proposed in recognition of the change in the way Parker Court will be able to be accessed once new developments in the area are completed. Parker Court will become a 'through road' and will no longer meet the definition of a 'court'.

Updating the name to Parker Drive will ensure that there is no confusion to people who are trying to locate properties on this section of road.
