The First Nations Health Authority and B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure are partnering - to host a transportation symposium that will hear from First Nations communities and municipalities - along the Prince Rupert to Prince George Highway 16 corridor. The discussions will focus on finding practical, affordable and sustainable transportation solutions to address both medical and non-medical travel and support healthy communities.​

Today, the ministry and First Nations Health Authority launched a broad survey of current transportations issues and challenges along the Highway 16 corridor. Due to the significant distance between communities along Highway 16, a "one-size-fits-all" approach won't address these challenges. The survey results and themes will provide the foundation for discussion at the symposium.

The FNHA marked the two year anniversary of transfer of health services from Health Canada’s First Nations Inuit Health Pacific to the FNHA on October 1, 2015. During Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey VI Commemorating the Transfer ceremony on October 22, 2013, First Nations Health Council representative Willie Charlie of Sts’ailes was the floor manager while Living Markers and Corner Posts from each region were stood up to ground the historic work in ceremony.

“We need to remember the commitment that was made in ceremony. In this health work with First Nations we’ve marked every significant step with ceremony. Our belief is that when you take care of the spirit, everything else will fall in line. One of the things in ceremony is that we remember who we are, who we’re working for, and it’s not just the people of today. Remembering our ancestors and the future generations that we’re setting the table for,” said Willie Charlie.

FNHA is looking to implement the “Take Home Naloxone” program in First Nations communities in a manner consistent with the developing Mental Wellness and Substance Use Strategy and activities to address prescription drug misuse. This work is being led by the First Nations Health Authority Health Protection team. The program is supported by Chief Medical Officer and First Nations Health Authority’s Health Benefits.

This session will provide First Nations communities with education and awareness regarding opioid overdose and Naloxone in order to protect community members.

18 individuals representing six Northern First Nations communities (Moricetown, Gitanyow, Gitkaata, Lax Kwa’laams, Tahltan) graduated from an intensive nine-day Red Cross First Responder training program supported by the FNHA October 8 in Terrace. This was the second of three Northern training sessions and among four others that have taken place in the province this year.

To date, 94 First Responders have been trained in 34 First Nation communities with one more training to occur in the north later this year. The FNHA raises our hands to those who take the time to commit to this training.

The BCAAFC is pleased to announce with its partners the Provincial Office of Domestic Violence (PODV), Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation (MARR), Ministry of Justice, and the Minister’s Advisory Council on Aboriginal Women (MACAW) the release of the Aboriginal Domestic Violence funding application.

The Aboriginal Domestic Violence funding is intended to respond to the needs of Aboriginal communities in BC in relation to domestic violence. It is intended to provide funding to Aboriginal communities to address this issue while reflecting community needs, and incorporating culturally-safe and responsive methods and traditions.

October 16 is a one-day National fast as part of the Moosehide Campaign, pledging to end violence against women and children. This is a day for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men in communities, organizations and governments across the country to unite in honour of all women and children.

"We will continue to ask men to take positive and concrete steps forward in standing up and speaking out against violence towards women and children," said Paul Lacerte, Founder of the Moose Hide Campaign. "By taking part in this one day national fast you are showing your love and respect for the women and children in your life and supporting their right for peace and safety in their homes and communities."

The Canadian Women’s Foundation is accepting proposals for Girls’ Fund Grants for 2016-2020, funding women’s organizations across Canada using effective approaches to ending violence against women, moving women out of poverty, and building strong, resilient girls. The Girls’ Fund grants are intended to support community programs or networks designed to increase protective factors in girls aged 9 to 13 – such as confidence, critical thinking skills, social connectedness, and overall resilience.
