Parents as Teachers National Center created a new Losos Award category this year, the Losos Impact Award, to highlight affiliates that are having a significant impact in the communities they serve. One of this year's inaugural Impact Awards went to Julie Miers (pictured left) and the Fort Worth ISD Parents as Teachers program. The program has grown significantly over the years and is now the largest program in the state with 60 educators serving the next generation of Texas Parents as Teachers families.

DSHS Breastfeeding Courses
|
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) offers a variety of breastfeeding education opportunities across the state to prepare health-care providers to support breastfeeding women and infants. Some are free to attend, but may have a fee associated with parking. DSHS believes that a positive, proactive approach to breastfeeding promotion and support is achieved through team effort. DSHS encourages all health-care workers who work with breastfeeding women and infants to attend these trainings. For agendas, instructors, and continuing education information, click here.

Lawmakers Deliver Twice for Children
|
On December 10, President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and on December 18 Congress passed a spending bill with nearly $1 billion in new money for early childhood education. These bipartisan deals are being heralded as significant moments for children, youth and families and the organizations that support them.
Funding for the Child Care and Development Block Grant, Early Head Start and Head Start, have been significantly increased from last fiscal year. Congress also continued funding for Preschool Development Grants, which supports states who are leading the way in early childhood education.
ESSA reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Video of the signing ceremony – as well as other information regarding the law – is now available on the Department’s ESEA web page. Click here to view.
In particular, please note the new White House report on the recent progress made in elementary and secondary education and how ESSA will cement that progress. Also, any questions about ESSA may be directed to a dedicated email address: ESSA.questions@ed.gov.
