Click here Vol 23 No 6 13 October 2017 Simon Community Home RunOn the morning of Saturday 7 October approximately 80 pupils from The High School took part in the Simon Community Home Run in the Phoenix Park. It was a great opportunity to socialise, get some exercise, and participate in what was a most enjoyable event for those who attended. Congratulations to Fields Chung who chose to run competitively and finished the course in an impressive time of 34 minutes - the fastest of 80 or so participants from The High School. However, equal credit is due to those pupils who preferred to walk or jog the route in order to raise awareness of the homelessness crisis and secure additional funding for the Simon Community. Ms Hutchinson Edgar would like everyone to return sponsorship money and any other donations to A22 as soon as possible.
These funds will go towards supporting the excellent cause of the Simon Community which helps fight homelessness in Ireland. French Visit to IFIOn Wednesday 11 October, all Form 4 French pupils enjoyed an outing to the Irish Film Institute. During their visit they saw “Ma vie de courgette” (“My life as a courgette”). It is an animated movie following a 9 year old boy called Courgette, who has lost his parents and has been sent to a foster home. The movie explores deep issues and the value of friendship and love. On a passé une bonne journée! A New Challenge for Annalise MurphyWe wish past pupil and Olympian, Annalise Murphy (HSD, 2002-08) every success as she enters the Volvo Ocean Race - racing 45,000 miles around the world as one of the crew on Turn the Tide on Plastic! 'This is a completely different challenge to anything I have ever done and I can't wait to start but also I'm pretty nervous!', she posted on social media recently. You can follow the race at www.volvooceanrace.com. Good luck, Annalise! Photo: Jen Edney Photo: Pedro Martinez Senior Debating WinThe High School senior debating team have won their first debate against Colaiste Eanna CBS. The motion was 'To end hunger, the world must embrace GMOs'; The High School team proposed the motion. Best of luck to the team in their next debate against Tallaght Community School in two weeks time. First Aid CourseOver the past two weeks, Form 4 pupils have been learning about First Aid. We’ve learned many vital skills such as how to perform CPR, how to put someone into the recovery position, and what to do if someone is having a heart attack. We also learned how to use a defibrillator and an epipen. Hopefully, we will never have to use these skills, but if we do, we are prepared. Mighty VictoryWell done to the mighty Minor Bs who won their match against St Columba's College 1-0 last week. The winning goal was scored by Nathan McLoughlin and just in the nick of time too! Musical InterludeA few weeks ago singer-songwriter John Spillane visited The High School to speak about traditional Irish music. We were delighted when one of our senior pupils took to the piano to perform a traditional piece for him. It was a special moment and we happened to capture it live on video. Here it is. Enjoy! A Date For Your DiaryThe annual Parents' Evening and Prize Distribution will take place at The High School on Wednesday 25 October at 7.30 pm. This year the guest speaker will be Ms Arabella Bishop, Senior Director and Head of Sotheby's Ireland. We look forward to listening to her speech and seeing our wonderful pupils receive their well-deserved prizes. Dates for your Diary
