Season's Greetings from ICHCA International as we reflect on a successful 65th anniversary year & look ahead to an active 2018
Welcome to the latest edition of Inside ICHCA International, our regular e-newsletter for association members, partners and cargo handling industry colleagues worldwide. In this edition we reflect on a very successful 65th anniversary year and look forward to an active 2018.
Thank you to everyone who attended our 65th Anniversary Conference & Exhibition in Las Palmas. I hope you agree that it was a truly fantastic event at which we looked at how to make the global cargo chain safe, smart, sustainable, secure and skilled.
In 2017, ICHCA International introduced Cargo Handling Voice, a monthly news digest of industry, policy and regulatory developments related to safety, security, sustainability and efficiency in cargo handling across all transport modes and nodes. By all accounts received, it has been a big success with Members and we will continue to provide this digest in 2018. We invite you to send your news to our Communications Officer to be considered for inclusion in future editions.
Looking forward to next year, we are pleased to announce that ICHCA will be running a Technical Seminar on Tuesday 17th April at the Hampshire Babylon Hotel in The Hague, Netherlands. Details of how to book will be available soon in the new year. The Seminar will be followed by the 79th Meeting of ICHCA's Technical Panel (formerly known as the ISP) which takes place on 18th April at APM Terminals offices in The Hague.

"I was privileged to be welcomed onto the stage as the new Chairman of ICHCA International at the 65th Anniversary Conference in Las Palmas in October this year.
I am honoured and excited to be taking up the helm of such a prestigious and important organisation as it goes from strength to strength. 2018 will see ICHCA International exceed 100 Members and I look forward to watching that figure rise as ICHCA builds its standing in the industry.
I enjoyed meeting many of you this year and I look forward to meeting many more of you and developing strong working relationships.

Just in case you missed these announcements at the conference...
- ICHCA International announced its new Chairman, John Beckett, who is Vice President of Training at British Columbia Maritime Employers Association
- Hapag Lloyd was announced Winner of the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award 2017 for its innovative Cargo Patrol system
- The decision was taken to rename ICHCA's ISP Panel at a meeting which followed the Conference on Thursday 5 October. It will now be called the Technical Panel.
- Also at the Technical Panel meeting, the new Chairman (Wouter de Gier, APM Terminals) and Deputy Chairman (Stephan Stiehler, Consultant) took up their posts.
CARGO HANDLING VOICE
In 2017, ICHCA launched Cargo Handling Voice, a monthly news digest of industry, policy and regulatory developments related to safety, security, sustainability and efficiency in cargo handling across all transport modes and nodes.
Featuring curated content ranging from regulations, compliance and best practice, to risk and incident reports, and innovative approaches and technologies, the aim of Cargo Handling Voice is to contribute to the knowledge pool within the cargo handling community.
By all accounts received, it has been a big success with Members and we will continue to provide this digest in 2018. We invite you to send your news to our Communications Officer to be considered for inclusion in future editions.

ICHCA IMO UPDATE
"Dear Members and Associates, you will recall that
earlier this year we issued a major Global Bulletin
detailing the extensive work we have undertaken with various Committees and Sub-Committees of the IMO (International Maritime Organisation).
We are extremely grateful for those members who
took time to send in their comments on the various
ICHCA shadowing internal Correspondence Groups (CGs) we established..."
ICHCA PUBLICATIONS UPDATE
Work has been progressing on major reviews of:
- BP5 Container Terminal Safety
- BP8 Safe Working on Container Ships
- BP15 Substance Abuse in the Workplace
- BP11 International Convention for Safe Containers
- BP10 Safe Working at Ro-Ro Terminals
These revisions are necessitating a major overhaul of the older style of Briefing Pamphlet to make them more readable recognising that not all our members have English as their first language, re-formatting them into ICHCA’s new style, updating the photographs and diagrams and, of course, ensuring they reflect the current state of development in safety, operations and legislation globally. All of these can be expected during the course of 2018 with BP 10, 5 and 15 coming first.
In addition to this, Members of the ITP have been working hard on a series of new publications:
- A major new set of publications on Safe Operations with Steel Cargoes and a Practical Guide to Steel Stowage.
- The Code of Practice on Lifting Personnel with Cranes (generic module) is entering its final round of wider consultation following comments received from members.
- The new publication on Collision Prevention in Terminals in conjunction with TT Club and PEMA (Port Equipment Manufacturers Association).
The Secretariat are, together with the Technical Advisor, also working on an updated and easier to read version of the Publications Catalogue.
Following on from this year's Global Bulletin, which featured our work at the IMO, we will shortly be issuing another Bulletin, this time focused on the most important Technical Queries that have been dealt with over the last few years and will be of significance to members.

INDUSTRY COALITION BRINGS CTU CODE CAMPAIGN TO INTERMODAL EUROPE
In a session on Cargo Integrity at Intermodal Europe on 28 November, an industry coalition consisting of Global Shippers’ Forum, TT Club, World Shipping Council and ICHCA International presented the fundamentals of safe cargo packing, movement of pests, responsibilities within the supply chain and understanding the CTU code.
The session aimed to raise awareness of the CTU Code and promote engagement with and application of its principals; identify issues that continue to lead to loss/damage, environmental harm or injuries; and engage with stakeholders to affect culture change, improve practices and enhance compliance.
ICHCA AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE & MEGATRANS EXHIBITION
Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA), the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) and ICHCA Australia warmly welcome you to the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) and International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) annual conference and exhibition to be hosted in Australasia for the first time - Melbourne, Australia (8 to 11 May 2018).

NEWS FROM COP23 MEETING
ICHCA has recently joined the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Here are the reports from the 23rd meeting held in Bonn in November 2017.

IMO IMDG UPDATE
IMO have now issued a December 2017 corrigenda for "IMDG Code, 2016 Edition Amendment 38-16" (product code IK200E).
Customers who purchased the e-reader file can access the supplement using the Internet Update/Check for Content Update function on The IMO Bookshelf.
Customers who purchased the electronic editions, namely, IMDG Code for Windows (Version 13), 2016 and the Electronic IMDG Code for Windows download (Version 13), 2016 will need to update their versions from this webpage towards the end of next week. The IMDG Code on the Web version will also be automatically updated towards the end of next week.
