The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program saves lives- but it needs the support of general practices! The evidence is clear that a recommendation from a primary healthcare provider is an important motivator for participation in bowel cancer screening. If participation rates could reach 60 per cent in Australia, over 83,800 lives could be saved by 2040.

Advances in genetics and genomics offer great potential for identifying patients at risk of disease and targeting treatment. However, GPs need up-to-date knowledge and skills in this domain.

RPA Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS) - New phone service for referral advice
The RPA EPAS has recently commenced a new mobile phone service available for health professionals to contact if they require advice/guidance regarding referrals to EPAS. There is no requirement to contact the service for every referral to EPAS, only if you require further advice or are particularly concerned about a woman you are referring. Contact EPAS on 0429 728 608, Mon-Sun, 8.00 am-4.00 pm.

All parents of children born in NSW receive a free copy of My Personal Health Record (the Blue Book). The Blue Book has valuable information about a child’s health and development. Children born outside of NSW who are living in NSW are also entitled to a free copy of the Blue Book. Parents should contact the Better Health Centre to order their copy. The book is available in English and 18 other languages.

Local Health District Mental Health Services for Older People – Evaluation of a Model of Care
A NSW Health model of care (MoC) was released in January 2017 to help guide good practice in specialist community older people’s mental health services (available here). GPs are recognised as a key partner of community OPMH services (also referred to as specialist mental health services for older people or SMHSOP). A very short survey has been developed to understand if the MoC has had any impact on integrated care or the relationship between community OPMH services and GPs.

Well Child Health Program - Online learning program for GPs and practice nurses
Did you know that the SLHD Community Paediatric Services provides an online learning program aimed at primary health care professionals caring for families with children aged between 0-5 years? The program has been written by an expert advisory team which provides training about the comprehensive use of the Child Personal Health record (Blue Book) for health and developmental surveillance for all children (child health checks) under five years.
