Dear wine lover, Standout Standish Shiraz - the 2015 releases The Barossa Valley's Standish Wine Company's journey to cult Shiraz status has been a steady and sure one. Their three beautiful, opulent, brooding Shirazes from the 2015 vintage will be released in a week - on the 1st June - and we are offering World Wine customers early privileged access to these standout wines. Only a few hundred dozen of each are made. After two previous vintages of very low yields, the global community of collectors and consumers of high-end Barossa Shiraz are hanging out for some supply. Thankfully, 2015 was a return to good yields, and weather conditions produced a really great Barossa Valley vintage. These wines are top-of-the-line world-class Shiraz. Winemaker Dan Standish is a sixth-generation Barossa Valley wine maker, and his use of open-topped oak fermentation vats allows for small parcels of grapes - even single rows - to be vinified separately. This allows for dramatic flaunting of the flawless purity that can be gleaned from the rich Barossa earths. The top-end American critics - in particular Robert Parker - love the Standish Shirazes and our local Winefront rates them at 96, 97 and 97 respectively. They are all dark and brooding with immense concentration, persistence and energy, but gently laced with a long fine cloak of silken tannin. They show wonderful staying power for those with immense patience and cool, dark cellars. Many collectors lay down Standish Shiraz as the core of their Barossa troves. However, don't think you need years of cellaring. Even now, these Shirazes are superb drinking - decant them to open them up to air, and dive in. 2015 Standish Shiraz $109.99 "Black fruit, liquorice, earth, grilled meat with pepper, dried roses, vanilla and exotic spices. Full bodied, rich and ripe, but savoury and controlled, thick with sooty and pleasantly raw-edged tannin, dense brooding flavour, a pulse of fresh acidity, then tannin and tar ‘n spice rolling into the long finish, and a surprising lingering mouth-perfume of roses and plums. Lots of layers here, and a more ‘natural’ feel than many Barossa Shiraz. It’s pretty bloody good". 96 pts Winefront 2015 Schubert Theorem $109.95 "Perfumed and floral, blueberry pie, raspberry, spice, grilled meat, subtle wild herb and liquorice. Full bodied, but not heavy, loaded with succulent red and black berries, distinct ‘mineral’ feel and flavour – pencilly even – fresh but unobtrusive acidity, and layers of thick graphite tannin to temper the bold fruit, closing with lush fruit, a slick of tannin, and alarming length. Strewth!" 97 pts Winefront 2015 Lamella $109.95 "I’m not sure Eden Valley Shiraz gets much better than this. Black fruits, black pepper and exotic spice, sage and aromatic herbs, BBQ snags, floral top notes. Full bodied, incredible density and depth here, black fruits with a subtle mintiness, all that spice and mouth-perfume, then sheets of silky ultra-high pixel tannin, cool acidity, and superb length, with a cascade of nourishing tannin to farewell. Superb". 97 pts Winefront We also have a six-pack with two of each of these wines available here, at a saving to the regular bottle price. The wines will ship late next week.
