First we made our way to Regina Mundi where we all won our first matches: 5-3, 9-0, and 7-2, respectively. After that success we jumped back on the bus and headed to Bandon Grammar School. Once again we won our matches so we were delighted. We were given a delicious chicken curry dinner at the school followed by chocolate brownies and cake. Then we went to Clonakilty Hotel and checked into our rooms. We enjoyed the swimming pool and jacuzzi there. Later we visited a nearby cinema where we watched a private screening of Dr Dolittle, ate popcorn, and chatted to our friends. After a long day we went back to our rooms and chatted some more before finally falling asleep. Next morning we
enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast before setting off to a zip line park. We tried the zip line route and abseiled down a wall. It was very windy so we clung to the ropes and poles. It was great fun. At noon we climbed back on the bus for the last time and headed home. It was an amazing weekend. Cricket Ireland AwardCongratulations to High School pupil Orla Prendergast who was named Female Youth International Player of the Year at the Irish Cricket Awards at the weekend. Her debut match for the Ireland Women's team was in June 2019 against the Netherlands. She has represented Ireland at U15 and U17 level and her proudest moment was scoring a century for Ireland U17 against Scotland. We wish our pupil every success as she continues to excel in this field of sport. MUN SuccessLast weekend eleven pupils attended the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference at a local school. Pupils from The High School represented the Russian Federation and Norway. We had two days filled with fruitful and constructive debate showcasing the best of our abilities. The topics ranged from The Militarisation of the Arctic to Animal Welfare in Agriculture. Despite the broad scope of the conference our delegations demonstrated immense capability and focus. The High School proudly secured four awards in total. Two pupils earned Highly Commended Delegate awards while another received a Commended Delegate award. A junior pupil was presented with a Distinguished Delegate award. I encourage any pupil interested in MUN to come
along to A24 on Thursdays at 8.15 am. The Great Reads AwardsRecently a number of pupils from The High School attended the Great Reads Award (GRA) ceremony. The aim of the GRA is to highlight new authors and encourage young adults to read more widely. It’s also an opportunity for pupils to voice their enthusiasm about good writing for their age group as the winner of the award is chosen by secondary school pupils from all around the country. The award was presented by Irish author Dave Rudden who was very entertaining. The winners were Dangerous Games by James Butler in the Junior category and Tuesdays Are Just as Bad by Cethan Leahy in the Senior category. All in all it was a fantastic opportunity to talk to pupils from other schools and to meet the nominated authors. HSD Chamber OrchestraThe HSD Chamber Orchestra performed a beautiful piece at Assembly this week. You can listen to their performance here. They are just one of the groups who will be performing at The High School 150th Anniversary Gala Concert at the National Concert Hall on 5 May. Tickets will be available to purchase online from the NCH soon. HSD 150On Monday all current pupils at The High School were presented with a special beanie hat to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the school. Lunchtime ActivitiesDates for your Diary
