July is here, my favorite. It’s summer, the days are long and nights are warm. Plus, there have been a lot of racing events to sweeten the pot! July 9th is my birthday, and for those of you who know me, that happens to be my favorite day of the year. My birthday weekend was very busy, and even though I should have been resting (I’ll get to this in a minute), I went Rally Sprinting. I was able to help out at our Region’s first ever Rally Sprint event at Rausch Creek, and minus the fact that I’m still cleaning dust out of my laptop and everything that was on site, I had a blast. The work that Nick Landis put into the program allowed the program to be a huge success. Kyle Salerno deserves a big thanks as well, as he was the “man behind the machine” getting the course prepped and ready for the participants. It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for me - I was at the beach about 3 weeks ago (for the first time in 3 years) and I was sick, and I have been sick ever since. This mystery illness has put a damper on things for me, so I’m trying to be positive (but it’s been hard). It’s also given me a lot of time to think about several of the events we’ve been having as a Region. It’s funny that the actions of one or two people, not even people we know, can set the course of the day off in such a negative direction. The hard work and dedication of a few select people in each program make those programs happen for the majority. It’s something that’s important for all of us to remember, when these few people put their hearts and souls into this Region, giving thanks where thanks is due - is something we should do. I am happy to talk about the people who deserve it (and please do not think this is something where I want you to thank me
personally…’cause I do not!)...please thank all of the rest of the leaders who make this club what it is...because it takes a village. For me personally, what I’d love for you all to remember is this quote, “If you can be anything, be kind”. Keep it Classy Susquehanna What a long, strange trip it's been! Hello my dirty friends, I know it has been a while since I last wrote something for the Squeal, but unfortunately life gets busy at times. This season has been an interesting one so far. We started the season with a practice/shakedown day with 45 entrants. The day ended up a little bit dusty, as we’ve come to expect from this venue, but good overall. Our second event was our first points event for the season and we had 49 competitors and A LOT of dust, I think I am still coughing it up. Our next event was an unusual one for us as we had a water truck available to help keep the dust down. We had 48 competitors, including a 2021 white with white interior Tesla Model 3, and the only issue that we had was the slime created for the first few competitors, myself included, immediately after the water truck. We recently had our 4th event and 3rd points event for the season only 2 weeks after the previous event. We ended up with 42 competitors and, despite the monsoon rainfall the day before, the event went well. Our next event on August 21st will be an interesting one as we will be holding a RallyCross at the same time as the Autocross in the parking lot next door. So, on Sunday July 12th the Susquehanna Region had its very first ever RallySprint event at Rausch Creek Off-Road Park in Pine Grove, Pa. We only had 11 competitors registered, but I can assure you that every single entrant loved the event even when they broke down. For those of you that don’t know, this has been 2 years in the making and we had many delays and hurdles to overcome along the way. Our course was around 1.6 miles in length with 14 runs total. Adam Kimmett managed to pull off the fastest lap time of the day, 1:59, and he also managed to get the overall fastest time of 28:19. Two competitors sadly, did not have as good of a day due to mechanical issues. Alex Kuklov suffered a suspension issue on his 2nd lap of the day and due to not being able to locate the missing component, was not able to get his 2005 Subaru Impreza back together. John Gusmano suffered oil leaks on his 1983 Mazda Rx7, but thanks to our course maintenance person, Kyle Salerno made him a new one on the spot. Unfortunately, they had a zipper break on their fire suit that put them out of competition after their 3rd run. The only other issue during the day was Adam Brock in his 1989 Volvo 240 became beached on the berm of the last corner for his last 2 runs of the 2nd session, but Michael Chilcote quickly recovered him with his sweep vehicle at the end of the run session so that he could continue to race after lunch. I want to once again thank everyone that has been involved in making this dream of mine become a reality, not for me, but rather for our members to have a “next step” to transition to after RallyCross, for the stage rally community to have a safe and affordable place to go to for testing and shakedown before major events, and for anyone else that just wants to go faster. This thank you also goes out to all of the volunteers who came out and helped make it possible. We are currently planning our next event and know that this program will thrive and become a wonderful addition to our region. Please stay tuned for volunteering opportunities. We're Midway Through The Autocross Season As you’re reading this, we’re either finishing up Autocross events 7 & 8, and we’re well into the season. We have events 9 & 10 in 3 weeks, so don’t forget to register for those events! Keep your eyes out for a special event we’ll be doing on August 21st. We’ll be holding a Test & Tune event, with the possibility for a school/instructional sessions in the morning. We look forward to seeing you out on course!
