Survey for Museums Workforce  -
Deadline 31st March 2016

Dear Colleague,

Arts Council England, together with Museums Galleries Scotland, the Museums Association and the Association of Independent Museums have commissioned BOP Consulting and The Museum Consultancy to undertake a major study that takes a forward look at the skills and attributes needed by the museum workforce. This covers museums and organisations across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, in the immediate and longer-term future.

At the heart of the research project is this survey of the museum workforce in the UK. They would like to hear equally from everyone working in the sector – from the highest levels of senior management to those starting out on their careers, from those working as paid employees to the army of volunteers and freelancers in the sector, and from those with responsibilities for curation, education, conservation and development, to those working in marketing, digital, retail, HR, finance, visitor services, museum development and all points in between. Similarly, they want to hear from those working across the full spectrum of museums – nationals, local authorities, university, military, industrial, historic house collections, independents and volunteer-led and run organisations.

The survey seeks to establish how people get into the sector; their employment status; experience of skills development and career progression; how they relate to their organisations and their attitudes to the sector, among others.

The results of the survey will be vital in helping the commissioning partners inform planning for investment, training and leadership programmes, as well as tackling issues of workforce recruitment, diversity and development over the next five to ten years. The survey should take around 15-20 minutes, depending on your answers.

The deadline for survey responses is Thursday 31st March 2016.
