  • Scams and what you can do to keep safe.
  • The phasing out of NBS Cheque books.

New Mastercard® ID Check

It's your job to find the bargains online. It's our job to make it safer by introducing a One-Time Passcode.

From 14 September 2020, we'll be introducing a quick and easy layer of security called the Mastercard® ID Check.

Mastercard® ID Check helps us make sure it’s definitely you (and not someone pretending to be you with your card) online.

Please make sure the mobile phone number and email address we have for you are correct. If we can't send the One-Time Passcode to you, the purchase can't be approved.  You can update your details at any NBS branch or by calling us on 0800 101 700.

Keeping Safe from Scams

Read below to find out more.

Phishing and hoax emails
Phishing is a fraudulent attempt by a third party to steal your personal information, usually made through email. Firstly,  if the email seems unusual in any way, such as spelling mistakes, strange formatting, or asking for personal information, it’s likely to be fake. However, scammers are making emails appear authentic, which is why you should never click on a link or download an attachment, unless it is from a trusted source.

What to do if you receive a phishing email

Don’t click on the link contained in the email.
Don’t reply to the email.
Delete the email.
Update and perform an anti-virus scan on your computer.
Update and perform an anti-spyware scan on your computer.

Phone scams
Scammers don't only strike online, they use phones too. The caller will often claim to be from a reputable organisation (like the police, IRD, tech or telecom company) perhaps offering a tax refund or to assist with a computer issue. Scammers will ask to take control of, or access your computer. Don't allow this under any circumstances, just hang up. Also, be particularly vigilant if you’re asked to disclose any Online Banking login details or install any apps or software.

Cheques to be Phased Out

The number of cheques being issued has been declining steadily, with many Clients now preferring to use digital payments, which can be faster and safer.  Alongside other banking institutions, we will also be phasing out cheques as a payment option.

If you have a cheque book, we will be proactively contacting you over the coming months to help with this transition, before we stop issuing or accepting cheques.

Next time you're in branch talk to us about your requirements for alternative payment options.
