FAC Residency on Toronto Island May 2015!

FAC RESIDENCY

FAC has been invited by Artscape Gibraltar Point to faciliate a feminist art residency! This two-week residency ( May 9th to 23rd ) will provide a platform to explore social justice issues with a feminist lens. The FAC residency will gather artists together who focus on social justice issues such as rape culture, trans phobia, racism, violence, media representation, cultural appropriation, environmental degradation and impact on indigenous lands, violence against women, and Islamophobic policies. We aim to create a space that is celebratory, positive, intellectually engaging and provocative. We are committed to this space being trans inclusive, anti-racist, and intersectional. The residency will include individual studio time accented with group discussions, readings, video, reflection, guest speakers, group and individual critiques. The resulting work will be presented in an exhibition at the end of the residency and pending curatorial acceptance will be included in a spotlight exhibition at FAC 2015.

Please help spread the word to your communities!

Artist Statement

I never thought I would be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast Cancer affects 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. Breast cancer is glamorized into a disease that is pre-packaged and pretty in pink. This does not reflect the physical suffering of woman and the psychological impact on the family. This series communicates my challenges with breast cancer self-image and what it means to be a woman when choosing a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy. Inspired by Christian triptyk altar pieces, I have brought my story of suffering and triumph to be shared as a point of dialogue for challenges faced by women with breast cancer and to create change. I was prescribed Tamoxifen for hormone positive breast cancer based on recent research for a 10 year treatment cycle. There is no regulation to test whether women can metabolize Tamoxifen to be effective. 20% of women are unable to metabolize Tamoxifen and will die. This is a call to action to have women on Tamoxifen tested for metabolization before they are prescribed medication to save their life. This is my story seen through my eyes, my husbands eyes and my daughter eyes over 2026 days.

HER2

By Maja Ardal
January 13–Feb 1, 2015, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre

A probing examination of the relationship between medical science and the human spirit.

(Toronto)—Nightwood Theatre continues its 2014/15 season with the world premiere of HER2 by celebrated playwright Maja Ardal at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street, from January 13 to February 1, 2015. Directed by Kim Blackwell and featuring a stellar all-‐female cast, HER2 is a probing examination of the uneasy relationship between medical science and the human spirit.

Seven women with one thing in common—a highly aggressive form of breast cancer—are recruited for a clinical trial of a new drug. While the researcher measures its progress in terms of blood counts and tumour sizes, the subjects of her experiment, struggle to deal with the renewed dread that paradoxically accompanies this sudden glimmer of hope in their lives. As the group under goes the treatment they bond together into a community characterized not by medical statistics but by their human qualities of courage, humour, and wisdom.
