Model United Nations

The High School attended a Model United Nations (MUN) event recently where we represented Pakistan, Slovakia, and Chile.  The High School delegates arrived dressed formally and bubbling with excitement. We headed straight to our committee rooms and began our debates. The first day was entirely spent in our committees discussing proposals called resolutions.  The next morning we continued the debates and at noon we headed to General Assembly where all delegates came together and one resolution from each committee was discussed.  We are pleased to announce that The High School won three awards over the weekend: two Distinguished Delegate awards and another for Best Junior Delegate at General Assembly. By the end of the conference we were all tired but wished it wasn’t over.  MUN takes place at HSD every Thursday morning at 8.15 am in A24.  Come and join us!

Form 6 Biology Field Trip

Last week Form 6 Biology pupils went on an excursion to Sandycove Beach to complete their mandatory Ecology Habitat Study at the rocky sea shore.  We arrived at Sandycove bright and early while the tide was at its lowest point. Fortunately the weather was spectacular and the scenery breathtaking.  We divided into groups and began to explore the habitat identifying the various flora and fauna native to Sandycove, such as the common shore crab and the bladderwrack.   We used many tools to help us examine the habitat such as quadrats (to carry out a qualitative study); pH indicators (to find out the pH of the rock pools); and a luxometer (to measure the light intensity).  Everybody was given an Ecology booklet to fill out during the day with a checklist, key, and instructions on how to carry out investigations.   We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to visit the rocky sea shore and expand our knowledge of this habitat.   We would like to thank our teachers for taking us on the trip and for the delicious ice cream on the way home.

Congratulations to this High School pupil (left) on his election as one of two ISSU (Irish Second-Level Student Union) Regional Officers for Dublin South.  The ISSU is the national umbrella body for Second-Level Student Councils in Ireland which
plays a vital role in representing and giving pupils a voice.  We wish our pupil every success in this important representative role.
