Apply Now: Day of Wellness 2016 Events

Hosting Wellness Activities on National Aboriginal Day: June 21, 2016

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) has a vision of wellness, doing so in a manner that honours First Nations inherent teachings, values our diversity and respects traditions and culture. FNHA wants the June 21 Day of Wellness events to become an annual wellness movement for First Nations peoples in BC.

This year we are requesting all successful applicants host their wellness activities on National Aboriginal Day, June 21st 2016 to promote First Nations as a whole celebrating Wellness in a unified effort.

Find all the details here!

Proposals deadline is April 29, 2016.

Oral Health Team Serves Downtown Clients at Annual Clinical Day

FNHA’s Oral Health Team travelled from across BC to Vancouver in early March to attend the annual Pacific Dental Conference. The team comes together at the conference every year to advance their skills and knowledge for the benefit of Oral Health services for First Nations communities in BC.

During its Vancouver stay, the team also spent a clinical day in the Downtown Eastside at the Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS), one of FNHA’s partners in oral health.

“This partnership with VNHS is win-win,” says Carol Yakiwchuk, FNHA’s Oral Health Manager. “Clients receive much-needed, free dental care in a supportive environment while the dental therapists, who typically work alone in remote locations, come together as a team to learn advanced techniques from their Vancouver-based supervising dentist.”

Midwives Association of BC Partners with First Nations on Traditional Birthing Circles

he Midwives Association of BC went above and beyond with their FNHA Winter Wellness Grant delivering three winter birth storytelling events in Penticton, Victoria and Vancouver this past season.

"The first birth I attended in the community was really special to me because I knew everyone there. And it felt really good to write on the paperwork that she was born in Westbank, in the community on reserve, and not in town," said one Midwife.

Beyond the usual pregnancy topics of nutrition, activity and gestational diabetes, these wellness events looked at traditional teachings and protocols about wellness habits in pregnancy, birth and parenting to add culture and context to why these activities are important and what they mean for healthy beginnings and healthy lives.

Saik’uz First Nation Walk for Winter Wellness

Above: Snacks, catching up and information sharing after the walk.

Winter can sometimes be an excuse to stay inside where it is warm and dry but Saik'uz First Nation decided to say no and start a walking group to support their wellness. The walking group supported wellness in a few ways, not only was it a way to improve physical activity but healthy snacks and information were on offer at the end of each walk.

Tuberculosis Services for First Nations Communities in BC Service Transition Update

April 1 marked the service delivery transition of the Tuberculosis (TB) Services for Aboriginal Communities programming formerly delivered by BCCDC to the First Nations Health Authority.

Bringing the TB program to FNHA provides a valuable opportunity to align TB education, programs and services with other First Nations Communicable Disease Control services internally and with partners, including BCCDC.

Importantly, having the TB program at FNHA gives a single FNHA point of contact to nurses and health staff in BC First Nations communities which will enhance community access to, effectiveness of, TB services.
