14 August 2019

Dear subscriber,

Welcome to this week's edition of Sydney Health Weekly! Central and Eastern Sydney PHN aims to make this newsletter your efficient one-stop-shop for primary health news and events within the central and eastern Sydney region. We are constantly working on making your news as targeted and relevant as possible and welcome your feedback to editor@cesphn.com.au.

Changes to CESPHN's mental health referrals process

CESPHN is currently reviewing the mental health referrals process for the Psychological Support Service (PSS) and Primary Integrated Care Service (PICS). CESPHN are streamlining referrals and are planning to move to one new referral form online for all centralised intake programs (PSS and PICS). We aim to integrate this into your current practice software to make it easier and retain a copy of the referral. This will be in line with the Department of Health Initial Assessment and Referral Guidelines to ensure your referrals are allocated to the right programs at the right time. Keep an eye out for our progress. Your input is valuable.
Email mentalhealth@cesphn.com.au with suggestions and feedback.

Push to encourage more people to screen for bowel cancer

Bowel cancer is our second biggest cancer killer. More than 100 Australians die each week from bowel cancer, but if found early, more than 90 per cent of cases could be treated successfully. Currently only 4 in 10 eligible Australians complete the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program test kit when it is sent to them in the mail. If we can increase participation to 60 per cent by 2020 and sustain this over the next 20 years, nearly 84,000 lives can be saved. With $10 million in funding from the Australian government, Cancer Council Australia have this year launched a nationwide media campaign to increase participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. As part of the campaign, Cancer Council has recently launched a new online toolkit to make it even easier for GPs and other health professionals to support their patients to screen. The toolkit includes links to order resources, helpful audit documents, and templates for sending reminder letters.

Sydney addiction seminars - depot Buprenorpine: will it be a game changer?

Perhaps the greatest disincentive to opioid pharmacotherapy for opioid dependence is the need for supervised dosing, which is inconvenient, time-consuming, expensive and often poorly compatible with life activities that hallmark “recovery”. Two depot Buprenorphine products, Buvidal® (Camurus) and Sublocade® (Indivior), have been submitted for consideration of listing under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in Australia. How and when will these treatments be rolled out in Australia? Are there any down sides to this new treatment modality? Will it change people’s preference for treatment medication? How will dose tapering towards eventual “graduation” be accomplished? These and other questions will be dealt with in this seminar.
