Keynote Speakers Announced for PIP Conference

An expert storyteller and a leading brain scientist will headline the 2016 Partners in Prevention conference, September 28-30. As opening and closing keynote speakers, Andy Goodman and Dr. Judy Cameron will bookend more than 50 breakout sessions, a film screening and more.

Opening keynote speaker, Andy Goodman, is an internationally recognized expert on storytelling and co-founder of The Goodman Center. Along with the book, Storytelling as Best Practice, he is author of Why Bad Ads Happen to Good Causes and Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes. You won't want to miss Goodman's talk on "Storytelling as a Best Practice," where he will explain why stories remain the single most powerful communication tool and how your organization can use stories to advance its mission.

Dr. Judy Cameron, a professor of psychiatry at the Clinical Translational Science Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, will explain in the conference's not-to-be-missed closing keynote how programs that teach young children social-emotional, problem-solving and language skills help them develop strong brain circuits that will benefit them for life. Dr. Cameron is a member of the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child and the Scientific Council of the Child Mind Institute.

More information is available on the PEI website. Registration will open in early August.

2016 Family Car Rally
Families worked together and made their own derby car for a chance to win amazing prizes.

Nearly 60 family members came out on May 21, 2016 to celebrate the 3rd Annual Family Car Rally, also known as the "Daddy Derby," in Dallas. Families enjoyed good food, fun activities, a special performance by the Dallas Mavericks' ManiAACs and a derby competition.

Texas Home Visiting contractor, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, with subcontractor partners, Lumin Education, ChildCareGroup, Dallas Independent School District and Family Compass, hosted the rally. Along with building derby cars, fathers and children enjoyed bubble making, face painting and more.

The ManiAACs, the Dallas Mavericks' big-man dance troupe taught a line dance, and families performed the new dance together. The men discussed the importance of a father figure and spending time with their family. Families also enjoyed shaved ice and barbecue.

Zika Awareness Expands as Threat Persists

The Texas Department of State Health Services has expanded its efforts to stop the spread of the Zika virus by mosquitos. With its link to microcephaly, Zika poses a serious threat to unborn children. Community contractors, especially those in contact with pregnant mothers, are encouraged to help families protect themselves from the virus.

The website TexasZika.org is the anchor for a public awareness campaign that includes grassroots outreach, educational materials, advertising, radio and news media. The website is also the source of official Texas public health information about Zika. Through TexasZika.org and the Texas Health and Human Services Forms and Print Products Catalog, community organizations can purchase communications toolkits that include posters, push cards and fact sheets.

In addition, the Texas WIC program is distributing Zika prevention materials, including mosquito repellent, through its breastfeeding promotion kits. Texas Home Visiting also allows contractors to purchase insect repellant for staff and program participants as an allowable expense.

For further questions on purchasing insect repellent as an allowable expense, please contact your assigned Texas Home Visiting project manager.
