Optical Confederation advice on the NHS complaints system in England

The Optical Confederation has issued advice for GOS contractors who are obliged to operate the NHS complaints system in accordance with regulations and with their contract with the NHS England Area Team regarding the provision of GOS and other (but not private) locally commissioned primary eye care services.

Department of Health publish details of 2014 NHS ophthalmic fees

The Department of Health has published details of increases in the NHS sight test fee, continuing education and training payment and pre-registration supervisors grant.

OFNC rejects Government’s 1 per cent increase for GOS fees

Following the Government's announcement that it will impose a 1 per cent increase in fees for services provided under the GOS contract, the OFNC, the negotiating body for the optical sector, has rejected this offer.

Following the negotiations with the OFNC, the Government has offered a 2.5 per cent increase on grants for CET and the training of pre-registration optometrists. The OFNC welcomes this increase. However no progress has been made on the IT proposals put forward by the OFNC, and the bid for funding that would enable proper investment in IT.

ABDO CET vacancy
The ABDO CET department in Colchester, Essex needs administrative help for six months to cover extended leave.

Working for three days per week and with some flexibility of hours, the person must have good IT skills and a general understanding of the optical profession. This post would suit an optical assistant or a DO returning to work after a break in career. Immediate start. Salary by negotiation.

ABDO College vacancy - Head of Operational Services (Salary up to £45K)

ABDO College is looking for a team leader with exceptional management and administrative skills to be Head of Operational Services at ABDO College.

Reporting directly to the College Principal the successful applicant will be professionally qualified to at least FBDO level and registered with the General Optical Council or have relevant managerial experience, be able to demonstrate and have an interest in optical education.

The successful applicant will lead a small experienced team delivering a number of key functions of the College:

The department is responsible for enrolling, supporting and servicing all students on ABDO College blended and distance learning courses. These include the FBDO programme, the BSc (Hons) course in conjunction with Canterbury Christ Church University, contact lens and low vision courses as well as Access and other courses that are run from time to time. Members of the team attend a number of recruitment opportunities during the year to promote the courses. An ability to work flexibly to include occasional evenings and weekends would be essential.

You will deal with major employers as well as independent practice owners, liaise with tutors and supervisors and have overall responsibility for all documentation within the department including assisting with the preparation of documents for official GOC visits. You will also work closely with our university partner so an understanding of the higher education framework would be an advantage.

In addition the department handles the ABDO student accommodation block and all bookings, as well as having responsibility for the ABDO College Bookshop.

In order to take on this responsible position you will need to demonstrate key leadership skills, an ability to think strategically, a willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ to get the job done and to share the ethos of both the College and the Association that we strive to be the best in all that we do.

Ophthalmic Dispensing courses

ABDO College offers a choice of two distance learning courses on the route to becoming a qualified dispensing optician:

Option 1
A two-year Foundation Degree course followed by a third year BSc Degree course in Ophthalmic Dispensing – leading to BSc (Hons) and the ABDO Level 6 FBDO qualifications.

Option 2
A three year diploma course in Ophthalmic Dispensing – leading to the ABDO Level 6 FBDO qualification.
