Health advisory: increase in Meningococcal W disease in Victoria

The Chief Health Office has issued an advisory notice about an increase in Meningococcal W disease in Victoria. There were 48 cases in 2016, compared to 17 cases in 2015, four in 2014 and just one in 2013.

  • All age groups are affected, with bacteraemia the most common presentation. However several cases have had less typical presentations, for example septic arthritis or epiglottitis.
  • Be alert for presentations that could be due to meningococcal disease. Consider testing for Invasive Meningococcal Disease in older patients with atypical presentations (septic arthritis, pneumonia, epiglottitis).
  • Vaccines are available on private script, and recommended for occupational exposures, travel and certain medical conditions, and can be offered to those who wish to protect themselves or their family from the disease.
  • A one year, free school-based vaccination program for Meningococcal W for 15 to 19 year olds will commence in term two of the 2017 school year.

Please take 5 minutes to update your details

SEMPHN is doing a comprehensive after-hours needs assessment in the coming weeks.

With this in mind, we need accurate, up-to-date information from health care providers across our catchment.

This will help us continue to understand the nature and capacity of primary health services across the catchment, and plan and implement services accordingly.

To make sure your details are current, please complete this short online form by 13 February.

If you have any questions please contact Chris Wood, General Manager, System Outcomes at SEMPHN.

Have a say in the allied health workforce

Victorian allied health practitioners, employers and managers are invited to identify issues that influence the accessibility and effectiveness of the allied health workforce in Victoria.

Occupational therapy, Social Work and Psychology are currently being researched by the Allied Health Workforce Research Program.

If you are an employer of allied health practitioners, or an allied health practitioner, you’re invited to complete this survey.

You can forward this survey to colleagues who may not have access to the survey.

For more information, see the Program Factsheet and Frequently Asked Questions.

The research program will inform policies and programs within the Department of Health & Human Services regarding health workforce development and reform for the allied health professions and the associated training system.

Hep C And You: A User Guide To The Latest Information

The Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug Users League has developed a new guide, Hep C and You: A User Guide to the Latest Information, to enhance understanding of hepatitis C transmission, testing and treatment among people who inject drugs.

The guide encourages people living with hepatitis C or at risk of transmission to get tested and treated, if needed.

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health, it offers a plain language explanation of hepatitis C, screening and treatment options and can be provided to patients by GPs and other health professionals.

The guide is available here.

To order copies of the resource, contact James Dunne, Director Programs and Communications at jamesd@aivl.org.au or on 02 6279 1600.

Ovarian and lung cancer drugs listed on PBS

Two new drugs for cancer treatment are now subsidised on PBS, the Minister for Health has announced.

• Olaparib (Lynparza®) is a maintenance treatment for women with high grade serous ovarian, fallopian, and peritoneal cancers and works by programming the destruction of cancerous cells.

• Ceritinib is used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. This medicine has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation, leading to a regression of tumours.

The full statement is on the Department’s website.

Other drugs listed by the PBS are: Riociguat (Adempas®) for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, dasatinib (Sprycel®) for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia, lenalidomide (Revlimid®) for patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, and tiotropium bromide (Spiriva® Respimat®) for patients with severe uncontrolled asthma.
