Click here Vol 22 No 29 11 May 2017 Sports Day TriumphThere really is nothing so lovely as The High School when the sun is shining and the vast school grounds are swarming with crimson and black-clad pupils, laughing, chatting, and playing games. Pupils tried their hand at racing, javelin-throwing, zumba-dancing, the shot-putt, the long and high jump, table-tennis, rounders, boxercise and Gaelic Football as well as enjoying an impromptu game of frisbee. There was something for everyone to try, including some delicious al fresco fare supplied by the catering staff. What a great way to clear the cobwebs in time for the summer examinations. There will be a whole-school Sports Day assembly on Friday 19 May when pupils will be presented with their medals and trophies. Well done to everyone who helped make this day such a great success. Croke Park Cultural TourLast Wednesday, we were treated to an excursion to Croke Park. The tour guides first of all showed us a short film detailing the rich history of the stadium and we were then shown the changing rooms used by all teams who play there. A jersey from each county was displayed inside the building. We were then brought to the main event. After walking through the tunnel an audio recording of a crowd cheering started to play and we emerged onto the pitch. We got to sit in the stands and were told about the events of Bloody Sunday in 1920. Then our guides brought us to the games room where we played fun simulations of GAA matches. Finally, we were brought to the restaurant and said our goodbyes. Women's Rugby World Cup Trophy at HSDOn 4 May the Women's Rugby World Cup trophy came to The High School. Our recent past pupil and Ireland Women's Rugby Sevens international Emma Murphy (HSD, 2008-14) along with current Ireland internationals Stacey Flood and Jeamie Deacon represented their respective teams. The Senior Girls rugby team and members of the Junior team played a tag tournament of five teams, under the guidance of Stacey and Emma. We all had great fun playing and taking pictures of the magnificent trophy. The day really encouraged all present to get along and support the Ireland team this summer. Thank you to all involved in the organisation of the day. Hopefully, the Ireland team can secure victory in our home tournament in August. East Leinster Athletics ChampionshipsOn 4 May The High School competed in the East Leinster Schools Athletics Championship in Santry. There were lots of events to choose from such as high jump, long jump, shot putt, javelin, all track distances and relays. It was an enjoyable day with The High School bringing home a total of 17 medals. See list here. Darkness into LightOn Saturday 6 May, a group of 40 pupils met at Marlay Park at 4.00 am in the morning for the Darkness into Light walk in support of Pieta House. We all received our yellow t-shirts and set off on our 5 km walk. Along the way we were cheered on by choirs, people with lit-up hula hoops and dogs wearing very luminous attire. When we were finished, we were greeted with an array of snacks, and we all went back home to bed. Microsoft CompetitionHigh School pupil James Cole has qualified to represent Ireland in the Four Nations Microsoft Office finals which is a worldwide event. James completed the Microsoft Word examination in record time, and is thoroughly deserving of this fine achievement. We wish him all the best in the next stage of the competition. Waiting For GodotOn Wednesday 3 May, Forms 4 and 5 pupils from the cast and crew of the 2017 HSD One Act Drama Festival Entry, 'Last Class on a Monday', had the pleasure of attending the Abbey Theatre to see the Druid Theatre Company’s production of Samuel Beckett’s 'Waiting for Godot'. A number of Form 5 pupils had been introduced to Beckett in our Transition Year Drama module, but we didn’t quite know what to expect before watching the play. The experience, as it turned out, was unexpected! See more...
