The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the University Counseling Center has partnered to offer Safe Zone Training opportunities that focus on LGBTQ+ and gender identity. Asian Heritage Month Opening Tabling will serve as the kick-off event for the University of Memphis Asian History Month. We will have activities ready for students in the UC Atrium, so that students can come at their own leisure during their lunch break. Activities offered will include lucky knot tying, origami, Japanese calligraphy, and Chinese ink drawing.

The Vietnamese Lunar New Year, or Tet, is the most celebrated holiday in the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam. The holiday usually falls between late January to early February. The new year usually symbolizes a new beginning with health, fortune, and many other valuable aspects of life. The Tea House event will bring relaxing Asian traditions to the UofM community during midterms to help the student body relieve some stress. This event will help student see the ways Asian Culture can be applied to aspects of everyday life, such as stress relief. We plan to have zen gardens, tea, Asian snacks, yoga and tai chi lessons ready for participants. This event currently has the support of the CIUM and ISA.

Volume 48 of The University of Memphis Law Review invites you to its annual symposium that will analyze America’s opioid overdose epidemic through a “pathways approach,” recognizing that the epidemic derives from separate, dueling sources—legal and illegal.  The event will feature a diverse and dynamic roster of legal scholars, policymakers, and interdisciplinary practitioners who will examine issues pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare providers, law enforcement, drug imports, the criminal justice system, public health, and more. The Junior League of Memphis will be hosting the Memphis Women's Summit on March 22 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the University Center. The summit is designed to improve the Memphis community by educating and empowering women in the city of Memphis to be better leaders in their personal and professional lives.

A special opportunity exists for students, the Leaders of Tomorrow Track. Female students in their junior and senior year with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher can apply to participate in the full day of Summit events, networking and being mentored by a leader who shares their similar interests.

The Leaders of Tomorrow application can be found under the tickets tab in the top right corner of the website. Students should select 1 ticket for Leaders of Tomorrow and they will be directed to the application. Students will be asked to list volunteer and leadership positions while in college, how those experiences have impacted them (less than 200 words), and what their post-graduation plans are.

On April 4th, 2018, the School of Health Studies will be hosting a Rise Against Hunger (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now) event to help combat the worldwide problem of hunger and malnutrition. This non-profit organization aims to end world hunger by providing nutritious, low-cost meals to children living in poverty-stricken nations all across the globe. Specially, Rise Against Hunger organizes events in which volunteers prepare and package meals to be shipped, while donors financially support the cause by providing the funds necessary to pay for the foods to be packaged. To register as a volunteer or to donate, please complete the application.

Since 2011, the UofM has had a policy that identifies where tobacco might be used on the campus. The University of Memphis believes that a healthy, safe and aesthetically pleasing campus environment for students, faculty and staff to learn, live, and work is beneficial to everyone. The policy can be found here: https://umwa.memphis.edu/umpolicies/UM1738.htm. Tobacco use is not permitted in any UofM-owned or leased property, including grounds, vehicles, and buildings. The only exception is residential rental properties governed by tenant leases, and individual guest rooms designated as 'smoking rooms' in the UofM Holiday Inn and the Fogelman Executive Center. Tobacco use is also prohibited in all state-owned vehicles. Several sites on the main, Park Avenue (South Campus), Lambuth and Millington campuses have been designated where the use of tobacco products is permitted. These sites are noted via links on the Designated Areas webpage.

Carson's Circle is named for Dr. Donald K. Carson, former Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Memphis. The award recognizes a select number of outstanding graduating seniors who exemplify Dr. Carson's ideals of making the university a better place through their involvement and leadership in campus life.

Nominees must be seniors at the University of Memphis who will be graduating in May, August or December of 2018. 

To be considered for this honor, students must be nominated via an online submission form, submit a nominee packet and obtain an additional letter of recommendation, which can be found online by noon on March 16, 2018.

Each spring, Student Leadership & Involvement in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of the President hosts the President's Leadership Recognition Awards. This reception honors the University of Memphis' finest and brightest student leaders and organizations for their leadership roles and service. We present awards in 25 different categories, including the new inclusion of the UofM “20 Under 30” which will recognize 20 of the University’s most influential student leaders. Nominations for all awards are now open including such award categories as Program of the Year, Organization of the Year, Distinguished Service, Most School Spirit, Outstanding First Year of Involvement, Student Leader of the Year, Advisor of the Year and more. More information can be found online. All nominations are due by March 30, 11:59pm.

This year’s Women’s History Month these is “Nevertheless She Persisted.” Each year, members of the UofM community are encouraged to nominate outstanding women in their lives for recognition at the months’ closing ceremony (March 29, 4pm). This year we are asking students, faculty and staff to nominate women who have demonstrated a strong will for accomplishing her goals and who serve as a testament to this year’s theme. Tiger Talent Goes Green is a one-day job shadowing program where undergraduate students in ALL MAJORS can earn $100 to explore careers in Renewable Energy Production, Energy Efficiency, Environmental Management/Recycling, Natural Resource Conservation or Environmental Compliance, Education and Training, and Public Awareness. For example, a Communications Major may shadow a Communications Specialist at a non-profit focused on reducing air pollution. Matched students will shadow the week of March 19 -23.
