SCT Rugby Victory

The High School played Mount Temple Comprehensive School in a replay of their first round match of the Vinnie Murray Cup competition on Monday 15 January.  Wet conditions made the ball slippery and the strong wind would force a change in both the teams' game plans.  The tension was growing as the desolate pitch filled with noise.  The physicality and aggression of the match was telling as after only a few minutes both teams were shedding valuable players.  A ferocious start once again played into The High School's hands and scrum half Stephen Landy made a valiant dive for the line.  Cormac Dempsey added the conversion and shortly afterwards increased the lead to 10 points.  The High School engine was motoring along but just as they looked to increase the lead again Mount Temple picked up on a wayward pass and scored under the posts. This signalled a monumental shift in momentum and soon The High School were under all sorts of pressure.  Brave defence lead by the indomitable Jamie Ukagba was enough to keep the northside school from crossing our try line.  The High School seemed to have weathered the storm and then were able to counter against the withering side in blue.  Two quick tries from Stephen Landy and Dylan Walsh concluded the hard-fought contest and The High School emerged 22-10 victors.

Young Scientist Exhibition

Last Friday pupils from Form 1 went to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the RDS.  There we found a large room filled with projects and another packed with information stands and interactive exhibits.  We wandered around the arena in small groups and talked to the scientists who were there.  There was one stand that particularly stood out to me, the Geology exhibit, where I got to touch a real dinosaur fossil.  That was very exciting.  There were interesting shows to see too, including one with duelling robots!  We were given some free goodies on the day including a pen made completely from recyclable products and pop-sockets for our mobile phones.  One lucky girl entered a quiz and won a free tablet!  We had plenty to chat about on the bus home and we all agreed that we would certainly visit the event again next year.

Climbing Win

Congratulations to Form 4 pupil Thomas Myles who won the Irish Bouldering League at the weekend, reputedly the longest continually running bouldering competition in the world!

Dublin Youth Orchestra

High School pupils Leah McGrath, Sarah Webb, and Kerry-Anne Timmins performed at The National Concert Hall on Saturday night with the Dublin Youth Orchestra.  DYO has a membership of almost 400 young players who perform in one of four orchestras.  Their youngest members are just 9 years of age.

Girls' Hockey Semi-Final

The High School Senior 1 girls played in the semi-final of the Claudia Tierney Cup last week.  They were joined by a merry band of loyal supporters who cheered them on from the sidelines.  Although they did not make it through to the final this time, they are looking forward to playing a second-round cup match against Muckross Park at 9.00 am this Saturday 20 January.  All support is most welcome!

Debating Win

Well done to our Senior debating team who won their debate last week against Jesus and Mary College, Goatstown.  The defeated motion was 'China is good for Africa'.

Scientific Chemis-trees

While everyone else was busy decorating Christmas trees pupils in Science Club were making colourful Chemis-trees: Christmas trees made out of chemistry laboratory equipment.  Did you know that metal salts can be used to create bright colours?
Copper(II) Sulfate gives a nice blue colour.  Nickel salts are green.  Red solutions can be a Strontium salt and the yellow can be Iron(II) chloride.  Science Club meets every Monday at 4.00 pm in C2 with Dr Brusey.

Still Life - Can You Help?

Pupils studying the new Art and Design course are requested to complete life drawings of real objects.  Do you have interesting objects such as a sheep's skull that might inspire our artistic pupils?  If so, then Ms Killane in the Art Department would like to hear from you.  Please contact her at killaneh@highschool.ie.
