With around 200 registered participants in attendance, the event was a success. Our family members were able to have a brisket bbq lunch on the lawn, enjoy live music, play lawn games, bounce around on an inflatable obstacle course, take pictures on Armstrong's Pirate Ship, participate in City of Savannah trolley tours, and attend our alumni pirate basketball game. After the Hurricane: Academic Calendar AdjustmentsThe Academic Affairs leadership team carefully reviewed options for making up class time lost due to Hurricane Matthew. Our normal fall academic calendar has a very small margin built in, which was exhausted with our earlier closure due to Tropical Storm Hermine. As a result, under federal regulations (and those of our accrediting body), we need to make up the seven days of class time lost as a result of Hurricane Matthew. Here is a quick overview of the changes that will affect the academic calendar going forward: FALL 2016 SEMESTER: · The Fall 2016 semester will be extended by one week, which will mean using the week currently scheduled for final exams (December 5 through December 9) as the last week of classes. · Final exams will be moved to the week of December 12, after Fall Commencement on Saturday, December 10. While not ideal, holding exams after Commencement was a routine practice at Armstrong only a few years ago. · We will open Monday, November 21 and Tuesday, November 22, during the week of Thanksgiving, to use as make-up days for the additional Thursday and Friday classes that were lost due to Hurricane Matthew. The plan is for Monday, November 21 to follow a normal Thursday class schedule and for Tuesday, November 22 to follow a normal Friday class schedule. Thank you, in advance, for your patience and your assistance as we work together as a community to ensure a successful Fall semester. Brand new to Armstrong State University, Pirates Educating Pirates (PEP) is devoted to providing the student body with awareness of sexual misconduct and alcohol and other drug use through peer to peer education with personalized outreach initiatives. Time this semester has been spent planning the program and recruiting students to be peer educators. Currently there are 8-10 peer educators awaiting training, but enrollment is always open. During spring 2017 students will begin their work as peer educators and will be required to complete 2 “presentations” per semester. In 3-5 years we hope Pirates Educating Pirates will continue to grow and be able to become nationally certified through NASPA’s Certified Peer Educator Training. There are many benefits to being a peer educator: develop leadership skills, make a positive difference in own life and lives of others, build your resume, create original campaigns, and gain volunteer/community service hours. PEP hopes to form a safe place amongst students to educate and rely on one another for support relating to sexual misconduct and alcohol and other drug abuse. We’re excited Armstrong State University now has a “PEP” squad to make a positive difference to the campus culture and conversation.
