Click to read more Asylum seekers without Medicare cards Each year, some 4,000 people who have experienced persecution or other serious human rights abuses settle in New South Wales. Asylum seekers are required to lodge an application for temporary protection Visas (TPV) or a Safe Haven Enterprise (SHEV), without this application they will lose access to Medicare and permission to work in Australia.
