Autumn Edition 2017

WELCOME

from the Community Relations Office

Dear

Warm greetings from Trinity!

Welcome to the very first edition of Trinity News. As our community of Old Trinity Grammarians (OTGs) grows, we are seeking to broaden and diversify the ways in which we engage with you.

Sent quarterly, this newsletter will update you about the many activities at your School, as well as providing you with information about what is on offer for you - locally, regionally, interstate and overseas. This new publication will complement The Trinity Grammarian, our Facebook page, our presence on LinkedIn and our website.

Please feel free to drop in to our Community Relations Office at any time. Located in Hudson House on the corner of Charles and Wellington Streets, our team is always very to happy to have a chat and take you on a tour of the School.

Whilst the physical fabric of Trinity may have changed since your time at school, our values and the essence of Trinity remain the same.

We hope that you enjoy the first edition of Trinity News and welcome any feedback you might like to share!

Vale Don Marles OAM

The Trinity community is deeply saddened by the death of former Headmaster, Don Marles OAM.

Don was an ambitious educator, whose leadership helped establish our Trinity culture of innovation and excellence. He led the School with passion, dedication and vision from 1979 until his retirement in 1992.

The hallmark of his 13-year tenure was the significant expansion of the School’s facilities, including the purchase and development of the Bulleen playing fields, the refurbishment of the Junior School, and the construction of the Chapel.

Don’s legacy will continue to be enjoyed by generations of past, present and future Trinity men.

Opening of the Centre for Business and Social Enterprise (CBSE)

The Centre for Business and Social Enterprise was formally opened on Friday 24 March 2017 by the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP.

This new building is home to our Commerce, Finance and Economics departments, as well as our outreach programs, Indigenous program, and debating and public speaking. While Arnold Hall made way for the new development, it has certainly not been forgotten, with the new building featuring a 250-seat lecture theatre retaining the name of the original building, Arnold Hall, as well as the original Honour Boards.

Gold Mitre Lunch 2017

On Wednesday 22 March, almost 140 OTGs who left Trinity 50 or more years ago gathered at the School for the annual Gold Mitre lunch.

Many of those who attended took the opportunity to tour the School with current students. This year’s lunch also featured a performance by a group of former St Paul’s choristers led by Geoff Brown (OTG1953) and David Ashton-Lewis (OTG1967).

Henty Institute

Almost 40 of our young OTGs are involved in the Henty Institute Mentorship Scheme for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The aim of this voluntary association with members of our community is to spark discussions, inform tertiary choices and career pathways, as well as to create a network of opportunity for Trinity boys. We are grateful that our OTGs have expressed interest in developing this program, and believe that harnessing some of the rich experience of the Trinity community in this way will serve the needs of our students, and make for even stronger family connections with our alumni.

The feedback from students, parents, and mentors has been very positive so far. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact Sharon Kendall in our Community Relations Office.

Business Mentors

Another group of OTGs is mentoring small groups of Year 10 students on a business project: providing advice and guidance on market research, how to write a business plan, how to negotiate with others in their team, procuring goods for their project, securing finance, as well as taxation and insurance.

We are grateful to them for sharing their time and expertise with our students. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Sue Felton on +61 3 9854 1215.
