HEADS UP! SCCA NEEDS YOUR INPUT!

by Jack Burrows, Area 2 Director

The bylaws which govern SCCA have remained largely unchanged for some years.  Our bylaws can only be revised by a vote of our members and require ballots to be sent and returned through the mail.  Given the time and money involved in mailing ballots with postage paid return envelopes, this is a costly, cumbersome, and protracted process.

The club's Board of Directors therefore proposes to drag SCCA into the current millennium by changing our bylaws to provide for electronic voting.  A detailed explanation of the proposal with its specific changes to our bylaws and the resulting voting process will be laid out in an article in upcoming issues of Sports Car.

Essentially, the Board's proposal is to allow SCCA to use electronic ballots (e.g., email) for things which our bylaws require to be voted on by our members.  It also provides for people to opt out of electronic balloting if they prefer to receive and return hard copy ballots by mail. This change can't happen unless and until its voted on and approved by our members.  Eligible members will therefore be receiving a ballot in the mail in the coming weeks asking for approval of electronic notification for items requiring a vote of the membership. The Board and I ask for your approval.

This would not a radical change.  Many - if not most - of SCCA's regions already use electronic voting for things like elections for region officers.  So the proposal would merely serve to bring SCCA nationally into the same practice as that which already widely used on the regional level.  I encourage everyone to read the Sports Car article and vote in favor of the option for us to use electronic voting.

Note from the RE

by Kristen Poole

I find it hard to believe that we are approaching the end of September already. Of course, that means the end of the season is fast approaching, and we (well, I at least) start looking in the rearview mirror to see what we could have done better as we shift our thoughts to 2020. That’s at least in part because we start accepting nominations for board positions in October, which will be here before we know it.

I want to take this space to announce that I will not be seeking re-election as the Regional Executive for next year, nor will I accept a nomination for another board position. The reasons are numerous—from family medical issues and struggles, to a hopeful career change in the near future. But more so, I think it’s just time to hand over the wheel to someone new. Fresh(er) blood, as it were.

That doesn’t mean I won’t be around and active. The board has voted to create an Emeritus R.E. position as a non-voting member of the board. Each exiting R.E. moving forward will hold the position as a mentorship opportunity to the incoming leaders of the club.

I think it’s safe to say we’re going to continue to see some changes for 2020—and probably not only in the board positions. I for one am excited about the possibilities. I hope you are, too.

Pocono Raceway Event Recap

by Chris Brown

This past weekend we had our 5th and 6th points events at Pocono Raceway. As a region, we want to extend a HUGE thank you to the NEPA region for letting us join them in these events. The team at NEPA puts on a great event, and everything this past weekend went really smoothly.

We had a few members join us at Pocono that have never been there before to AutoX including but not limited to, Ken Blessing, Mark Hetrick, Jake Limm, Quinn Slonaker, and Ed Walls. I talked to all of these gentlemen throughout the event and to say they were ecstatic would be an understatement. I can't tell you how many times I heard Mark say "this is one of the best weekends of my life!!".

If you want to see me flat spot some RE-71r's, check out the Facebook page for the hilarious video and comments.

I think that pretty much wraps up the excitement that was Pocono this past weekend. If you haven't already, you should greatly consider doing one of these events next year!

The End Is Near...

By Nick Landis

Our last event was one that few of us could forget easily and for good reasons. Event #5 was hands-down the longest course that we have had to date. We had a total of 46 competitors including a few new faces. To give you an idea of the course size, the fastest run for the morning (shorter) course was 71.268 seconds and the afternoon (longer) course was 98.846. I have to give a big thank you to all of the competitors as well as the core workers for being to make it work considering how thin we had to stretch everyone out.

Our next event is scheduled for October 19 the at the Farm Show lot in Harrisburg. This is the end of the points season for us and many classes are very tight right now with a few competitors needing to be there in order to complete enough events to be in the running for the year end trophy. I look forward to seeing you all at the event and want to remind everyone to register early for the discounted rate.

FIRST EVER* Susquehanna Match Tour!

by Melissa Mauro

Have you ever heard of a Match Tour before? Make sure to read all about it here.

For Susquehanna Region’s event, we’re going to run it like this:

Points events will be Saturday AM, Saturday PM, and Sunday AM events (for a total of THREE more points events for the year!)

Saturday will be two sessions with 3 runs each. We’ll take your fastest time with the morning runs, and add it to your fastest time in the afternoon to determine the overall winners for Saturday.

Sunday we are going to do a single 4-run session in the morning to determine the challenge round qualifiers.  The challenge round on Sunday afternoon will be be broken out PER HEAT into 1st-8th in PAX are the “Top Dogs”, 9th-16th in PAX are the “Under Dogs”, and everyone else who participates in all three points events will be entered into a drawing to be in the lucky dog challenge. So we’ll have a total of 16 Top Dogs, 16 Under Dogs, and 16 Lucky Dogs.  From there, each grouping of racers will compete in a single elimination round to determine the overall winners of the event!

Remember - to participate in all of the fun, you have to sign up for the entire weekend, which is why we’re opening Weekend Registration up first to allow everyone guaranteed spots for both days.

And if that wasn’t enough fun for one weekend, we’re going to have a cookout on Saturday night, and you’re invited.  We’ve asked you to let us know if you can make it in the registration on MSR. You can update it anytime before registration closes, but this way, we know how much food to get for everyone.

We hope to see you there, for what we hope will be a great way to end our 2019 season!

Susquehanna's TRSS Makes 50 for 2019!

By Melissa Mauro

Susquehanna Region’s third Tire Rack Street Survival event officially scheduled for November 3rd, and we’re breaking records!  TRSS has never had 50 schools nationwide in one year, and our school marks the 50th for 2019! Let’s make Tire Rack, the Street Survival Program, and SCCA proud with this event!

If you know of anyone who would benefit from taking the school, please send them the registration link below.

If you’re interested in coaching at this event, please register as a coach.  If you’ve never coached before, but you’re interested, you can become a coach by taking the course.  Please make sure you email me at streetsurvival@scca-susq.com when you send your coaching certificate to Tim Beechuk.

I can always use help planning and organizing the event, so if you’re interested in helping, please email me, or reach out to me on Facebook.  This is truly an amazing cause, and I want to do as much as I can to make this an equally amazing event.

September Regional Meeting

Thursday, September 26th • 7:30 p.m.

September 26th's meeting will be held at a different locations this month. We're going to meet at Cordier Auctions, 1500 Paxton Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104  (the building that shares the parking lot with Alan's shop, Auto Seat Cover).

Because this isn't a restaurant, we're going to be getting dinner, so if you can respond to this event so we can get accurate food counts, that would be greatly appreciated. We'd also appreciate a small donation (like 10 bucks a person) for food. The meeting will be BYOB, so feel free to bring your own adult beverages to enjoy while we're meeting.

We hope to see you there!
