Casting A Vote 100 Years On

On the centenary of women winning the right to vote, here at The High School pupils have been carrying out a mock election of their own.  2R and 2B worked together to carry out a mock election for all Form 2 pupils at The High School.  A total of 144 votes were cast and there was one seat available.  The voting method was by Proportional Representation/Single Transferable Vote.  There were six parties on the ballot; Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour, The Green Party, and Solidarity-People Before Profit.
We began preparations by creating the ballot papers in the computer room.  We researched the party logo and the leader of each political party.  The next class we separated into groups and began to come up with campaign slogans and posters.  The election took place on the last class on Friday 26 January.  We worked at one of the desks where people got checked off a list and received a ballot paper.  Voters then ranked their candidate preferences from 1-6.  After the election we worked out that a party needed to reach a quota of 73 to win the seat.  We eliminated the parties who could not get the number of voters needed. Fine Gael won the seat by 12 votes with Fianna Fáil coming second.  This helped us learn about how the election system in Ireland works.

Model United Nations

Pupils from The High School attended ROCKMUN at Blackrock College on 2 February.

Delegates registered with their committees and began to talk about resolutions on topics such as the Rohingya Genocide. Later on that evening we attended a General Assembly where music was played and speeches were made. The following morning delegates made their way to their committees.  We attended lunch and breaks so opposing delegates could get to know each other.  The evening ended with another General Assembly where delegates debated resolutions that were passed by the committees.  Debbie Ogunkayode

Board Game Fridays

Junior pupils are welcome to come to the Library each Friday at lunchtime to play board games and make new friends.

Speed Book Dating

It is almost St Valentine's Day and this week in the Library pupils are joining in a fun 'Speed Book Dating' game.  Each pupil gets 5 minutes reading a book, rates it, then moves on to try a different book.  They look at six different texts in total.  It is a great way for pupils to try books that they would not normally consider reading.

Show The Love

The Green Schools Committee has been running a 'Show The Love'
campaign.  A poster in the shape of a green heart has been put up outside The Reynolds Hall and pupils have been asked to sign it.  This is to raise awareness about climate change and to show we care about the many things it affects.  This is part of a wider campaign in Ireland and the UK to show our governments how much we care about this issue.

Form 5 Study Skills

Pupils from Form 5 participated in a Study Skills Programme last week. The aim of the course was to equip pupils with the skills they need to help them achieve their best results in their examinations.  The day involved discussions about time management, health, well being, and study techniques.

Art Gallery

Here are some evocative, ink sketches (3ftx 4ft) painted with bamboo sticks by our imaginative Form 2 pupils in Art class recently.

HSD in the RTÉ Archive

This week in 1990 pupils from The High School took part in a fashion show on RTÉ television.   Tanya Hempenstall compered the fashion parade on the ‘Jo Maxi’ catwalk.  All the clothes on display were bought in local second-hand shops.  The pupils raised over £2,500 from the show for Oxfam.

Zion Strictly Come Dancing Event

Parents and friends of Zion Parish National School are organising a Strictly Come Dancing evening on 14 April (not 13 April as stated in last week's newsletter) at the Stillorgan Park hotel at 8.00 pm to raise funds for the school and playground.  You can come along on the evening (tickets are €25 available from Mary - 087 8545510).

HSD Parents' Association News

In November 2017 the Parents' Association partnered with the school to roll out StudyClix.ie access to all pupils in Forms 3, 5, and 6.  Feedback from parents and pupils alike indicates that the intiative has been well received with data analysis showing that usage at The High School is comparable with similar sized schools. One interesting fact though is that our Form 6 usage is at the higher end of the curve.

Our next event is planned for Monday 12 March commencing at 7.30 pm in The Reynolds Hall when Dr Harry Barry (www.drharrybarry.com) will present a lecture entitled “The Anxious Adolescent”.  This event will address a range of issues associated with teenagers including pupil wellbeing and the role of technology.  Parents and guardians across the school are invited to attend; tea and coffee will be served in the Dining Room following the talk.
