At any time, please stop by this tribute created by our 7th grade students. Fall Festival UpdateThank you, parents, for your amazing support with our annual Fall Festival. It was a such a beautiful event this year! Together you helped the UDA Foundation raise nearly $8,500 towards our $150,000 goal for the year; these funds will be used to support project supplies and UDA’s enrichment programming. Well done, UDA families! Fall Festival 50/50 Opportunity DrawingCongratulations to Meredith Pung, the winner of the Fall Festival 50/50 Opportunity Drawing! Total sales from the raffle brought in $980, so half of the pot has been donated to the UDA Foundation, and the other half to our winner. Halloween CostumesStudents interested in dressing in costume may do so during school hours on Tuesday, October 31 only. Clothing must be school appropriate and masks and items resembling weapons should be left at home. Students who do not wish to wear costumes to school on the 31st should arrive in standard UDA uniform. Sidewalk Power WashingThe City of San Diego has been implementing procedures to combat the spread of Hepatitis A, including the regular power washing of city sidewalks through the downtown Clean and Safe program. The sidewalk directly in front of UDA (from 14th and E to 14th and F, as well as from 14th and F to 13th and F), will be power washed on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. In addition, surrounding city sidewalks (including C, Broadway, E, F, and G) will be power washed the second week of each month. Community ResourcesIn our urban community, there are a variety of resources available to help keep everyone safe. If you see a need, please take the initiative to reach out to one these resources. The more calls these organizations receive, the more likely they are to take action. Homeless Hotline Clean and Safe Environmental Services Department Homeless Crisis Public ForumAs we are aware, East Village is still amidst a Hepatitis A outbreak and problems associated with the homeless issue. As a result, EVRG believes East Village and surrounding communities need to become a major voice in the answers to the homeless crisis. On Wednesday, October 25 from 6:00-7:30pm, a homeless forum and public conservation will be held at the Balboa Theater to discuss what is being done, what works, and what is next. Please obtain your free entrance ticket here as soon as possible, as space limited. Speakers include: Ruth Bruland (Chief Program Officer, Father Joe's Villages), Amy Gonyeau (Chief Operating Officer, Alpha Project), Veronica Hughes (Formerly homeless mother, SDSU student), Peter Seidler (San Diego Padres managing partner and philanthropist), Rick Schnell (Retired SDPD, Founder Homeless Outreach Team), and Gordon Walker (CEO, San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless). Caught You Being GoodThis past week, UDA rolled out a new school-wide program called “Caught You Being Good.” The Caught You Being Good Program promotes expected behaviors such as being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind throughout the school. By demonstrating one or more of the expected behaviors, students may be awarded a ticket. Two tickets will be drawn from classroom collections each Friday, and those selected students will earn a day of Free Dress. Second GradeStudents in second grade are participating in Change4fins, a two week program that supports and expands the OCEARCH STEM curriculum. Students will collect change to make a change, and 50% of proceeds will go to UDA’s science programs. Look for donation boxes at the front office and 2nd grade classrooms if you would like to contribute. Visual ArtsKindergarten and 3rd grade students are using black light to illuminate their “bioluminescent” fish! SpanishStudents in 5th and 8th grade Spanish recently had the chance to collaborate with Border Angels, a local organization focused on human rights in our border community. Fifth grade students hiked in Border Field State Park to learn about the work that Border Angels does, to visit the international border, and to see Friendship Park, where many families meet on the weekends to talk to family members and friends through the border wall. They even had a surprise visit from one student's father, who was on the Tijuana side with balloons! Eighth graders stayed closer to home and went with Border Angels to do outreach to day laborers at a local Home Depot. The students gave out food, water, and informational pamphlets about services that Border Angels offers, and had the chance to use Spanish in the real world. Both trips were powerful opportunities to experience and discuss the realities of life in a border community. Online Uniform OrdersThe UDA online store is accepting orders now through October 31.
