53 Days to Go- For Youth, By Youth.

53 days and counting until the Gathering Our Voices Aboriginal Youth Conference kicks off in the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh (Prince George, BC).

Our goal for the conference is simple: give youth the tools to work towards a better tomorrow by improving themselves and the world in which they live. This event is guided by a council of Youth who set the theme and content. 

We are pleased to announce the inclusion of the first annual BC Aboriginal Youth Social Enterprise Contest. The contest is open to all Aboriginal youth (age 14 to 29) living in B.C. There are three categories and finalists will win a free trip to Gathering Our Voices 2015 along with significant cash prizes.

Nisga'a students Go Pop and Chip Free

Students from Alvin A. McKay Middle School who took up the No pop or chips challenge had their accomplishments acknowledged in front of classmates.

From December 1st to 19th, students from Alvin A. McKay Middle School pledged not to drink pop or eat chips as part of the FNHA Winter Wellness Challenge. The challenge was taken up by 2/3 of the school population with a focus on eating healthy. READ IT HERE...

The First Nations Health Directors Association and First Nations Health Authority are working together to coordinate a forum specifically for Health Directors on Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention: Hope, Help, and Healing.

This interactive learning session will be held April 14, 15, 16, 2015 at Harrison Hot Springs Resort in the Fraser-Salish region near Agassiz. Learn more

Interested in studying health, but not sure where to start? Simon Fraser University's Aboriginal Pre-Health Program is designed for anyone of First Nations, Métis or Inuit heritage who is thinking of pursuing a health career, but would like to begin with a supportive orientation to university.

Circle of Support - 14th BC Aboriginal Diabetes Conference

2015 marks the14th BC Aboriginal Conference. Last year our conference drew over 350 participants, volunteers, facilitators, trade and craft fair people. The conference takes place March 9-12 in Penticton BC.

  This conference will:

  • Provide a forum for participants to come together in a spirit of sharing and mutual support
  • Enable people with diabetes and their support persons to leave the conference with more practical knowledge and awareness about health promotion and prevention of diabetes and its complications
  • Provide culturally appropriate education for people who work with Aboriginal People
  • Enhance awareness, understanding and knowledge of Health Care Workers serving and desiring to serve the Aboriginal community
  • Increase knowledge of resources available and accessible to Aboriginal People living with diabetes

Who Should Attend?
People of all ages who are affected by diabetes..... families, youth, community and support persons, workers, etc.

The BC Student Healthy Living network is now accepting applications from students who wish to join and are looking to make their school a healthier place. Students aged 12-19 are urged to apply, and have the opportunity to obtain grants for healthy living school projects that will have lasting effects on the health and wellbeing of themselves and their community.
