TERM 3 WEEK 3   AUGUST 1, 2018
OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

OLG’s Social Justice Initiatives Reach across the Globe.
Visitors to any of our classrooms may have noticed a milk container slowly filling with ‘rip tops’ from drink cans. The Spiritual Ministry coodinates this school-wide collection in suppoort of Wheelchairs For Kids - Perth WA. Br Ollie Pickett and the Wheelchairs for Kids volunteers have built over 30,000 wheel chairs for the world's most poor children. Currently the volunteer retirees make 300 wheelchairs a month.

OLG has long supported this enterprise and at the last handover of our collection to WFK, we included quite a number of crocheted blankets created by school community members, coordinated by Mrs Trish Sherlock.

The photo shows a Nepalese child sitting in a WFK chair covered by a rug donated by OLG. (Trish even identified the person who actually crocheted this particular rug.

Congratulations to both Jackson Rose (Year 1) and Maisie Brown (Year 3) who are award winners in the 2018 Angelico Primary Exhibition.

Well done and thanks to Mrs Deed for fostering the artistic talents of our students.

PRIMARY ANGELICO ART EXHIBITION MONDAY 30 JULY - FRIDAY  10 AUGUST 2018 Forrest Centre, 221 St Georges Terrace, Perth.

Digital Technologies Within the School Curriculum

To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, at home, at work and in their communities. Information and communication technologies are fast and automated, interactive and multimodal, and they support the rapid communication and representation of knowledge to many audiences and its adaptation in different contexts. They transform the ways that students think and learn and give them greater control over how, where and when they learn.

2019/2020 Enrolments

We are currently conducting enrolment interviews for our 2019 and 2020 Kindergarten classes. To simplify the experience for parents wishing to enrol their child in both the Pre Kindy class of 2019 and the Kindy in 2020, we combine both interviews. You do however need to go through the tedious but necessary task of completing an enrolment form for both. The blue form for PK and ‘buff’ for K.

 Myths and Facts

There is an often encountered, but false, belief that Catholic schools are required to enrol a certain percentage of ‘non-Catholic’ students. I suppose that ideally we would enrol every Catholic child in the surrounding suburbs and if there were still room, we would then take in those of other faiths.

The reality is that the enrolment of most Catholic schools consists of a mix of children of Catholic, other Christian faiths and non-Christian faiths. Each Diocesan Bishop sets limits on the percentage of non-Catholic students in their schools – in the Perth Arch Diocese this limit is about 80% need to be Catholic.

A basic expectation is that all families enrolling their children in a Catholic school are supportive of the Catholic ethos of the school and understand that none of the religious aspects and activities of the school is optional. We offer a Catholic education and full participation is expected by all.

While we are dependent on school fees to enable us to operate, we will never refuse or withdraw a family’s full inclusion in the school due to their inability to pay the full fee. It would be fair to say that I would expect a family to put their school fee obligation above their desire to go to Bali.

On the other hand, if a Catholic family came and said, we genuinely want our child to attend a school that will support us in raising that child with strong Catholic values but we are genuinely too poor to pay anything at all, I would have no hesitation in enrolling their child.

Being Catholic is about what you do rather than what you say. This is how I measure myself and OLG. Undoubtedly we will spend time in Purgatory for all the times we have fallen short but we do try.

Oh, for My Parents to Have Had the Foresight.

God bless

STEM Lunch Time Club .
During Tuesday lunch time STEM club, children have been looking at ‘Floating Eggs’ in the Science area and children in Design Technologies area have been making buildings found in New York.
Q: How Does the Floating Egg Science Experiment Work?
A: The egg will sink in regular tap water because the density of the water is less than the density of the egg itself. Adding salt to the water increases it’s density making it more dense than the egg. Therefore the egg will float in the salt water.

Observation by Isaac Mottolin’s (PPB) : "The normal water  is light so the egg sinks to the bottom. Salt makes the water thicker so the salt moves up to the top".

‘Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world’ Maria Montessori

The P&F meeting was cancelled last week due to low attendance, which was somewhat understandable due to the terrible weather!

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 29th August - it will be beneficial for as many people to attend as possible as we plan to outline the feedback received over recent weeks, next steps and exciting upcoming initiatives.

Each Class Representative distributed the P&F feedback forms last week electronically. If you have not yet provided comments and would like to do so, please return completed forms to your Class Rep by Friday 10th August. Alternatively, you can anonymously complete the feedback form(s) which are located in the OLG office.

We appreciate it’s not easy to find the time, however all parent support and input is invaluable in ensuring the success of our social and fund-raising events and initiatives throughout the year.

We know that an effective father has a profound impact on their kids, thus it is of great importance to establish fathers and father figures that interact with their children as effective as possible.
