Below are many of the planned events for the rest of the year. Be sure to mark your calendars! We learned that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. We learned that ants are very busy and carry objects 20 times their body weight. We took ourselves outside and found ants to prove this point by watching them pick up and carry food items put in their path. We also studied the amazing world of honey bees, making our own bees out of different kinds of material. We also observed insects around the schoolyard such as beetles and ladybugs. We have watched the outdoor caterpillars eat leaves and climb their way to the tops of small bushes. We are hoping to see them turn into a chrysalis. We are even more anxious to see what kind of butterfly will emerge. The 4-year-olds have become little insect experts! 8-Year-Old NewsAs we wind down to the end of the year, the 8 year old class still has a lot going on. We are diving into the world of non-fiction and how it can be used to write a report. Lately we have been doing a lot of research as we prepare to write our research papers on global communities. We also finished looking into greater detail some things we learned in international week about our school community; as well as following up our trip to a local geology to see how research can be used to find oil buried beneath the surface of the Earth. We will continue this theme in the coming weeks as we head into science week. June 7th Concert and Picnic! As promised, our final concert will mostly feature music by our talented student writers. Already, ten original songs plus added bits to two children classics will be featured. The 3s and 4s will do their own versions of these songs on a not-yet-chosen date. However, for our older children, they will kick off our festivities for the June 7 School Picnic. Also, the best recorder compositions will be played as solos, duo, and even trios. All recorder students have been coming up with their own pieces, once they reach the "black belt" level of Recorder Karate. Children and classes can even practice the songs at home or in their classes as I have posted videos showing the song lyrics on Youtube while I play and sing the songs. The easiest way to reach these clips is to go to Youtube and then type in "Mister Stevenson Concert." Again, no children are on the clips, for security purposes, just the chord charts, as they are called. Additionally, students will play multiple instruments, including the already mentioned recorders, ukuleles, bass guitar, drums, and glockenspiels. Yes, it's another ambitious undertaking but why set the bar "low?" Already, the compositions are being sung on the buses and maybe you've even heard them at home. They are coming up with some very catchy tunes or song ideas! * * * * * After the concert, we will have our school's spring Picnic! The school will prepare shashlik (barbecue) and drinks. Families are encouraged to bring a dish to share. For our students fasting during RamadanOur school is happy to provide the following accommodations for children who will be fasting (Swam) during Ramadan.
