Experts Explain Adult-Onset Hypogonadism

You've probably heard the term low testosterone before.  Some people refer to it as "Low T."  There are different types of low testosterone, however, and a new paper published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings gives healthcare providers more insight on one of them: adult-onset hypogonadism (AOH).

Testosterone is an important hormone for men.  It gives them their masculine characteristics and drives their libido, too.

Some men suffer from primary hypogonadism (caused by problems in the testes) or secondary hypogonadism (caused by problems in the parts of the brain that are involved with hormone production).

But men's testosterone levels naturally decline as they get older, too. This is called adult-onset hypogonadism. Men with AOH may start to feel weak, fatigued, and moody. They may also lose their desire for sex or have trouble getting erections.

Last year, experts met in Washington DC to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of AOH. They wrote the paper to help fellow clinicians better understand the condition.

Guilt After Masturbation is a "Relevant Health Issue" for Men: Study

Men who feel guilty after masturbating are more likely to have mental health problems than those who don't feel this way, according to Italian researchers.

Their study, published recently the Journal of Sexual Medicine, involved 4,211 men who were being treated at a sexual health clinic. The men's average age ranged from 48 to 51 years.

Each man underwent a physical exam and completed a questionnaire about his masturbation habits and feelings about masturbation.

About 8% of the men said they felt guilty after masturbating.

Guilt was associated with depression, anxiety, and general psychological distress. Men who felt guilty also tended to have more sexual and relationship problems than the men who did not feel guilty.
