Australian Groundwater Schools 2017 - Adelaide & PerthThe Australian Groundwater School is vital for Australian professionals working with groundwater. Our flagship course, and the premier course of its type in Australasia, the Australian Groundwater School provides participants with a broad but rigorous introduction to groundwater. Introducing hydrogeology, assessment methods, modelling, managed aquifer recharge, management, governance and more, the course truly encompasses the fundamentals of groundwater. Scientific, policy and management personnel who want to gain a solid grounding in groundwater should strongly consider attending this course. Lectures, demonstrations and tutorials are given by leading groundwater professionals. Our presenters are experienced hydrogeologists and specialists in both public and private practice, from industry, universities and research agencies. NCGRT PhD Recruitment Program ... We are pleased to introduce a couple of our new recruits for our PhD program. Tim McMillan is a PhD student commencing his research at UNSW in February 2017 on the geology and groundwater of the Southern Coalfields. His research will improve our understanding of how groundwater interacts with underground mining, and is supervised by Dr Wendy Timms with the support of NCGRT and the UNSW School of Mining Engineering. Sponsorship for his research is provided by the NSW Department of Primary Industries, and a PhD scholarship from the Australian Government. Tim recently completed a B.Sc. Advanced (1st class Honours) at the Univ. of Wollongong. Sarah Marshall is a PhD student commencing research at Flinders University in March 2017 on groundwater resources in the vicinity of iron ore miles in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Sarah will examine the effect of uncertainty on geological structures on groundwater flow systems, and resulting uncertainty on water quality and quantity following mine closure. She will be jointly supervised by Professor Craig Simmons, Professor Peter Cook and Dr Shawan Dogramaci. The project is funded by Rio Tinto Iron Ore, and by an ARC Linkage Project awarded to Flinders University. Sarah previously worked as a hydrogeologist with Geoscience Australia. Dr Glen Walker Stay tuned for abstract and 2017 tour dates Announcement: 2017 NCGRT / IAH Distinguished Lecturer - Dr Glen Walker On behalf of the NCGRT and IAH, we are delighted to announce that our 2017 Distinguished Lecturer is Dr Glen Walker. Bio: Dr Glen Walker Glen Walker has conducted groundwater and salinity research for over 30 years with CSIRO in Adelaide. Specific research interests included recharge and discharge, vegetation and salinity, catchment modelling for salinity management, groundwater-surface water interactions and climate impacts on groundwater. He also led the groundwater component of the Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields project and is a recipient of WE Woods Award for National Excellence in Salinity Research. Since his retirement from CSIRO in 2014, Glen has been consulting with his company, Grounded in Water, and is a member of the Independent Scientific Expert Committee for Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development. 2nd Gas Policy and Water Management2-Day Course on Environmental Assessment for extracting CSG and Shale Gas Date: Thursday, 2 March, 2017 - Friday, 3 March, 2017 | CANBERRA, ACT You will be exposed to the most critical issues facing the industry and gain understanding on likely directions in the next few years. The course will be Chaired each day by an experienced mentor, supported by a team of specialist Presenters. You may opt to attend either one or both days. Hydrogeologist (Graduate)Employer Northern Resource Consultants You will work with the Earth and Water Team to help clients manage and achieve best practice outcomes for their hydrological and hydrogeological environments. You will need to show a knowledge and understanding of water quality analysis and management including groundwater modeling, water quality chemistry and field and laboratory techniques. It is crucial you have strong report writing skills and the desire to develop the confidence and ability to communicate accurate scientific data and interpretation to multiple audiences. |
