Reading Boot Camp Builds Skills and Confidence
|
|
| |
In December, Foundation Executive Director Deborah Anderson attended a very special celebration at Beverly Elementary School. The festivities marked the end of a four-week, intensive Reading Boot Camp held for students in grades 1-3 who were identified as struggling readers. The Foundation is proud to have provided a donor-funded, school-wide grant in support of this reading program.
Under the direction of teachers Tanya King and Mary Bertun, students met after school twice a week for one month to get extra support and reading practice specifically designed for each student’s needs. The 90-minute sessions were crafted to be fun and interactive. Families were also given materials to help build skills through at-home activities, and parents expressed appreciation for the teachers "taking the time to try something different."
Research into early reading instruction has shown that falling behind in reading can cause a student’s self-confidence to erode. This often leads to behavior problems at school and disengagement from learning. King and Bertun designed the program to build not only academic skills, but also to build student confidence and foster a love of reading.
At the celebration, Anderson was paired for activities with a student named Allan. He described reading as “really hard and not fun” when he started Reading Boot Camp. In just four weeks, he tested at grade level and now loves reading. Like Allan, the other students who participated in the program have shown impressive academic gains and, more importantly, improved self-confidence in their skills as readers. Support from generous donors makes innovative and effective programs like this possible.

Leave a Legacy through Planned Giving
Planned giving, or legacy giving, allows a donor to plan today for a gift made tomorrow. These major gifts provide long-term income for a non-profit organization, furthering its mission for years to come. There are many ways to include a favorite charity or cause in financial planning. Gifts of appreciated stock, life insurance, IRA disbursements and bequests through a will or trust are common examples. By including the Foundation in your financial planning, you become one of our most important partners in our mission to serve children, families and teachers. To learn more, contact Deborah Anderson via email or (425) 431-7260.
