TERM 2 WEEK 1 MAY 2ND, 2018 OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Welcome back to the new term. I do hope everyone had an enjoyable break and you were able to spend extra time with your children. Happily, our early Childhood children now have full access to the new Nature Playground and appear to be loving it! A highlight for many has been the statue of St Bernadette kneeling before Mary which is to be found under the log bridge across the stream. Part of the rationale for its placement is to remind us all of the sacredness of nature and the need to look after this gift from God. An aspect of this care is treating the features of the new playground with a high level of care, which means walking around the plants, trying to stop leaves and sand getting into the drain at the bottom of the creek; having fun in the boat/yacht, the ‘Sister Jo’, but also treating it well; taking care of the bungarra; etc. Parents are asked to remember that, while this is a marvellous addition to the children’s activities at school, it is not available as a community playground after school. We have a legal duty of care to provide teacher supervision of all our students until they leave the school grounds. Our staff currently “do” 4 or 5 duties per week supervising our students before (Year 1&2 courtyard and netball courts) and after (bus duty, Kiss and Drive, eastern exit) school as well as during recess and lunchtime. I am loathe to add a further ‘duty’ to the roster as I would like our teachers to have some time at the end of the day to prepare for the following day’s lessons and still get home in time to attend to their households. You will agree that your children are well served by the school’s staff and so I ask that parents wanting to spend time with the children in a playground make use of the City of Stirling facility next to us. Our access to and use of the larger grassed area is still waiting for approval from the landscaping contractor. Hopefully this will be forthcoming in the next few days. 8b The contract has been let and Prime Constructions will very soon commence work (supposedly this week). The immediate impacts will be: · The eastern entrance will be fenced off and unavailable for use. Parents and staff will enter and leave the school site via either the ramp, the small gate at the top of the driveway or the gate near the roundabout. The Kiss and Drive is a good option for students beyond PP. · The administrative functions of the school (Office, Finance, assistant Principals and myself) will move into the former Pre Kindy room. · The usable space of the hall will be reduced, with the stage area being fenced off from the rest of the hall. This will result in fewer chairs being set out for assemblies and a greater reliance on standing room for parents. · For the time being P&F meetings will continue in the existing Staff Room and Board meetings in the Board Room. · The reception end of the Admin building will be fenced off. · The builder’s site office will be located in the former PPB classroom. They workers will have sole use of the old Kindy toilets attached to the range of rooms. Spiritual Ministry Fundraiser The Ministry is supporting Caritas this term. Thanks to Lola (2G) and Ruby (PPB) Kerr, the Ministry has a full sized soccer ball signed by their aunt, Sam Kerr. To say that Sam is a star player is an understatement. The winner of the soccer ball is Lachlan D'Vaz 5G. $153 was raised towards Caritas. Thank you everyone. Chris Kenworthy Principal Please contact Peta Taylor on 0419 260832 if you can help out with volunteering. To access our online order system please visit www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au. Instructions for signing up are on the website or you can contact the Support line on 1300 116 637 for assistance. IMPORTANT NOTICE - Please read There are an increasing number of online orders that are not being captured due to parents not confirming their orders. Once you have placed an order please check your confirmation email or your "active orders" section to ensure your order has been placed, as we are getting numerous children at canteen quite upset that they haven't received their lunches. Pre-Primary As of Term 2 the Pre-Primary students will not have access to the canteen for recess items and icy poles at lunchtime. This week's assembly will be presented by students of 6B. Parents of 6B children are invited to the staff room after the assembly for a cuppa with Mrs Grace Vagliviello. Congratulations to the students who received Merit Awards at last week's assembly. Italian: Years 2-6 Italian Assessments will be carried out in Term 2, Week 4. Could you please ensure that your child/children revises the work that they have been learning this term in preparation for their assessments. Grazie Mille Signorina Algeri Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop is open Tuesday from 2.15pm - 3.00pm and Friday from 8.15am - 9.00am. Knitting Club starts back Tuesday lunchtime Week 2, 8th May in the Library. “OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to run with the kids and have fun. We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focused during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children. OLG Run for Fun is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and has now commenced. The more parents, the more fun! OLG Run for Fun will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for fun. As the club is run by volunteer parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip for all students must be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend. Days: Every Tuesday and Thursday morning The body achieves what the mind believes.
