Aya Chebbi confirmed as keynote speaker

We are delighted to announce that Aya Chebbi, award winning Pan-African feminist and internationally acclaimed Tunisian activist, will give our afternoon keynote address at our upcoming 2018 annual conference.  

Ben Macpherson MSP, the Scottish Government Minister for Europe, Migration and International Development and Imogen Davies, Oxfam GB's Programme Adviser on Youth Active Citizenship will also address the conference as keynote speakers, before a packed day of engaging sessions.

In celebration of the third anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Year of Young People in Scotland, this year will focus on the role of young people in development across the world.

PM announces “fundamental" shift in UK Aid spend

At the end of August, in a speech during a visit to South Africa, Theresa May announced that UK aid must align with the UK's national interest.

She also pledged to maintain the UK's 0.7% GNI spending commitment, but spoke of a "fundamental" shift in aid and development policy emphasing the role of trade and investment.

Further Funding for Decentralised Energy Access in Malawi

The University of Strathclyde (UoS) and its partners have just been awarded £1.3m funding by Scottish Government for their Rural Energy Access through Social Enterprise and Decentralisation (EASE) project running 2018 – 2023. 

Since 2015 UoS has been working on complementary projects with partners United Purpose, Community Energy Malawi and University of Malawi WASHTED Centre to advance decentralised energy access in Malawi.

Linda Norgrove Foundation to develop a post-graduate medical training programme for women in Afghanistan

It’s not that surprising to hear that there is a shortage of doctors in Afghanistan but, crucially, it’s the lack of female doctors which impacts on women’s health.

John Norgrove, Co-founder and Trustee of the Linda Norgrove Foundation, tells us about their plans to further develop their scholarship programme allowing young Afghan women to study medicine.

UK Aid Small Charities Challenge Fund deadline approaching

The next review date for the Small Charities Challenge Fund (SCCF) is Thursday 27 September. This fund is open to small UK-registered charities and not-for-profit organisations. Grants of up to £50,000 are available for projects of up to 2 years.

On Tuesday 4 September, our newly appointed Effectiveness and Learning Manager, Philippa Ramsden, will attend a guidance webinar hosted by the Fund Managers (Mannion Daniels).

Philippa will share her thoughts on the webinar on the Alliance Community. If you have applied for an SCCF grant, or are a current grant holder we encourage you to also share your experiences.

Scottish Government Small Grants open for applications

If you want to work with your partner organisation to ensure that good safeguarding policies and procedures are in place and being followed, don’t forget you can apply for a capacity building grant for this purpose. 

Organisations working in Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia are strongly encouraged to use this opportunity.  Scottish organisations engaging in other countries may also be eligible, as feasibility and capacity building grants are open to support work in any countries categorised as medium or low in the UN Human Development Indices.

SDG Network seeks engagement with UK VNR

The UK Government's commitment to undertaking a Voluntary National Review (VNR) in 2019 of the UK's progress towards achieving the SDGs is welcomed . During August, members of Scotland's SDG Network collaboratively produced a breifing note for DFID setting out the importance of engaging stakeholders in Scotland.

Rohingya crisis one year on: Holding on to hope
