A new tool designed to help healthcare professionals boost referrals to structured education courses for people with diabetes has been unveiled. The new 'Improving your diabetes knowledge' Information Prescription has been developed by Diabetes UK and Kent and Medway STP. It is now available nationally on the Diabetes UK website or via EMIS or Vision and is part of a series of Information Prescriptions for healthcare professionals. Electronic insulin passports will be trialled in hospitals across the Wessex region as part of an initiative seeking to improve diabetes care through digital innovation. Dr Partha Kar, Associate National Clinical Director for Diabetes, NHS England, announced the trial of digital insulin passports to enhance hospital safety this week to mark Insulin Safety Week 2019. They are being rolled out in the area thanks to Diabetes Hothouse, a new programme connecting digital health innovators with pharmaceutical companies to explore new innovations that could help people living with diabetes. Healthcare professionals can now access a series of infographics highlighting the impact of food on blood glucose levels. Endorsed by NICE, the resources have been created by Dr David Unwin, a doctor from Southport known as the Low-Carb GP, to visually illustrate the “glycaemic consequences of dietary choices”. Severe hypoglycaemic episodes are the leading diabetes-related inpatient emergency, according to a new snapshot audit. The first nationwide survey of harms affecting people with diabetes in hospital took place in September last year as a bolt-on to the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA), which is held every two years, with the latest one taking place this autumn.To read more, click here. Commissioners have been urged to implement NICE-recommended diabetic footcare structures following a nationwide audit. The recommendation was made in the fourth National Diabetes Foot Care Audit Fourth Annual Report, which found 2.7% of people with diabetes with severe ulcers underwent a major amputation within six months, four times more than those with less severe ulcers. The panel, which is yet to be unveiled, will be from NHS England, Getting it Right the First Time (GIRFT), Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation (DRWF) and the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP). Two diabetes specialists are encouraging healthcare professionals to become “facilitators, not fixers”, as a way of empowering people with long-term conditions. Dr Charles Fox and Dr Anne Kilvert, consultants from Northampton General Hospital, run a specialist diabetes counselling and empowerment course for healthcare professionals, which focuses on training participants to work with people to identify ways of improving their own diabetes care.
