Dear staff,

Fabricate is the official student newsletter at the Melbourne School of Design. You are receiving this email as a current student or staff member of the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning. The cover image is of Notre Dame du Haut which is is one of the finest examples of the architecture of Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier and one of the most important examples of twentieth-century religious architecture.

2012/13 MSD Summer Research Internships

Date: Applications close 5.00 pm, Monday 3 December

Applications are now open for the 2012/13 MSD Summer Research Internships.  The research internship program provides an opportunity for MSD coursework master’s students who are undertaking a research project as part of their degree, to write-up their research over summer for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Interns receive payment of $400 per week up to a maximum of eight weeks.

Final Show @ ABP

The ‘end of an era’ is upon us as our Architecture and Old Commerce buildings are demolished to make way for the construction of a landmark new building, designed by John Wardle Architects and NADAAA.

To mark the occasion, ABP is hosting a celebration centred on the sensational 'Six Degrees: Greatest Hits 1992-2012' exhibition, the final show in our current home. The night will feature a digital show on the life of the Faculty, music and food stalls in the Atrium.

Academic Skills Workshops for Research Students

Enrolments are now open for Academic Skills’ November workshops for RHD students. These sessions are open to Masters by Research and Ph.D students, and cover areas of interest for students in the early, middle or later stages of their candidature. Topics include: thesis structure and cohesion, literature reviews, working with a supervisor, presenting an argument, academic presentations and effective use of word processing software.

Pause Digital Festival: Mapping People in Space

Date:  Saturday November 10 and Sunday November 11
Venue: 215 Spring Street, Melbourne

Arup’s Melbourne office will be hosting a Mapping People in Space workshop as part of the Pause Digital Festival.

Facilitated by Francesco Anselmo (Arup, London) and Aaron Tan (University of Melbourne), the workshop will investigate sensing networks and location-based services; providing an overview of location-based services and tracking systems and an introduction to mesh networking. These include RFID (radio frequency identification), NFC (near field communication) standards, wi-fi and bluetooth hacking as well as sniffing with Arduino. Participants will be creating a building-wide proximity sensing network with Synapse RF100 and Processing.

Closure of Architecture Building Computer Labs

To allow for the relocation of computer lab facilities into the decant building at 757 Swanston St, the computer labs in the Architecture Building will begin closing in the coming weeks. The closing dates for the Architecture Building computer labs are as follows and there will be absolutely no access to these spaces after the dates listed:

The student print room will also be closed at 5pm on Friday 23 November and will re-open in 757 Swanston Street.

FabLab will be closing

Date: Friday 9 November

The FabLab will be closing Friday 9 November to move to the new facilities at 757 Swanston St. The FabLab will do their best to complete all jobs in the queue submitted before Wednesday 7 November. If you submit a job after this date the FabLab will not complete the job. The FabLab will reopen on Monday 4 March 2013.

Architecture Building Clear Out

Date: Friday 16 November

All items must be removed from all areas of the Architecture Building by 5.00 pm Friday 16 November. Anything left in the building after this date will be disposed. There will be no exceptions.

You MUST collect ALL your belongings from ALL areas of the Architecture Building. This means all personal items, all work, all models and assignments from:

  • Inside lockers & on top of lockers
  • All teaching spaces
  • All corridors and open spaces
  • All level five student studio spaces

Student access to the Architecture Building will also be removed at 5pm on Friday 23 November.

Re-enrolment and subject selection for 2013

Date: Re-enrolment closes Friday 14 December

If you are continuing your studies in 2013, please ensure that you’ve enrolled into all your intended subjects in 2013. By fully enrolling into all your subjects for 2013 you are helping the Faculty with its resource planning. This includes appointment of teaching staff as well as venue management (lecture and tutorial room allocations) to accommodate anticipated subject enrolment numbers, which, in turn will increase the likelihood of favourable timetabling and class registration outcomes for students.

If you are currently only enrolled as a part-time student in 2012 and you wish to be full time, you should enrol into additional subjects via the Portal as soon as possible.

Changes to Special Consideration

If you are offered special assessment as a result of an application you have made for special consideration for an exam or in-semester test, you have two options, regardless of whether you have received the mark for the original assessment or not:

  1. You accept the offer (by attending the scheduled special assessment). If you accept the offer, the mark from the special assessment will supersede the mark from the first assessment (even if the original mark is higher than the second mark)
  2. You decline the offer (by not to attending the scheduled special assessment) and accept the original mark

Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize 2013

Date: Applications close 21 November

The Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding architectural student work which demonstrates excellence in response to place, technology and Australian culture.

The winner will be announced at the Australian Achievement in Architecture awards in March 2013. Prize-winning and short-listed designs are exhibited on the Australian Institute of Architects and SONA websites.

The 2013 Bluescope Steel Glenn Murcutt Student Prize is open to:

  • Students who have completed an Australian Institute of Architects/SONA recognised Australian architecture course in 2011/12;
  • Undergraduate or Masters students enrolled in an Australian Institute of Architects/SONA recognised Australian architecture course during 2011/2012.

Six Degrees Greatest Hits: Alumni Retrospective Series Exhibition

Date: 19 October – 23 November 2012
Time: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm
Venue: Wunderlich Gallery, Architecture Building

Six Degrees feature twenty years of their work in the Wunderlich Gallery as part of ABP’s Alumni Retrospective Series, an annual series of events which celebrates the work of Faculty graduates and highlights the exceptional contribution they make to Australia’s design culture and built environment.

Six Degrees  have been part of the cultural fabric of Melbourne’s CBD since they designed the first laneway bar, Meyer’s Place and they have continued to have continued to contribute to the rich bar culture Melbourne is so well known for. They are also responsible for revitalizing other neglected part of the city including the Vaults below Federation Square, the City Square retail precinct and the Boatbuilders Yard at Southwharf.
