Greg's Message

Hello Parents and Friends of St. Anne’s

The weather was hot last Sunday for our working bee, but we completed so many valuable jobs, such as new sand for our sandpit, fixing an outdoor bin, repairing a window handle, cleaning window ledges,  multiple garden tasks, tidying up store room in hall…..To the generous parents and students who helped us out - thank you! It certainly was  a great debut by our new working bee coordinator - Sylvester Longo. Thanks Syl and Clare Bellio who coordinated tasks with Syl. See you all on Sunday from 11:30am onwards for our parish picnic. If you can help out on the day please advise the school office.

Parent Information Nights

We had a very pleasing response to our parent information nights. All sessions were well attended. Many thanks to our teachers for their insightful presentations.

Open Days
Our “Open Days” are on Wednesday March 20th, Thursday, March 21st and Tuesday March 26th from 9:30am - 1pm.
Enrolment tours and talks will be occurring on these days. If you know of families who have children set to commence school next year please “promote” these days and our great school! It is important to note that tours and talks are not restricted to these three days. I have already undertaken a number of tours.

Foundation
Our Foundation students become “full time” as of next week - we look forward to seeing them five days a week.

Year 5/6 Sport
Our term 1st Year 5/6 interschool sport program continues on Friday 1 March at 9:30am. We are playing Our Lady’s, Surrey Hills.  Volleyball is at Our Lady’s; cricket and T-ball is at Surrey Park. Families are most welcome to come along. Congratulations to the 25 students who represented the school at the North Balwyn swimming carnival last Monday. All children participated whole heartedly; the number of parents we had on the day lifted the spirit of the team. The new swimming tops - a Parents and Friends Association initiative - looked fantastic!

Twilight Sports
Our annual twilight sports for all Foundation - Year 6 students will be held at Genazzano on Friday 15th March, beginning at 5pm, concluding at around 7pm. Please be advised that this is a “no alcohol” school event.

School photos
School photos will be taken on Tues 2nd April.  Could all children please wear summer uniform.  Photos will commence at 9am sharp.

Learning and Teaching

Communication
There are several digital ways we communicate with our St Anne's families: newsletter, skoolbag app, online calendar, seesaw and semester reports.

Skoolbag App
Is the best way to keep up to date with school events, reminders and permission slips. Please remember to change your settings if your child/ren have changed year group.
New parents please download the skoolbag app and set up an account. You then need to search for St Anne's Primary School and select your child's year level.

Seesaw App
This app is used to share and celebrate classroom life and activities. This is a platform that allows photos and work to be shared with families.  A printed invite will be sent home with all children this week with instructions on how to set it up so that you are able to receive notifications.

Newsletter
Please go to the St Anne's website to subscribe to the newsletter.

If you have any questions please email me or pop into school on a Wednesday or Thursday

Thanks

Student Wellbeing

Helping by not helping

How can we help to cultivate resilience plus in the lives of our students?
Parents and teachers are helpers – we want to help our kids. But sometimes that gets in the way of our kids being able to experience the “small exposures to adversity” that they need. In our culture today of time constraints, instant results and perfection, there is a huge temptation to “swoop in” to help and take the short term pain away. We should instead consider allowing small mistakes, adversity and setbacks for kids. Resilience is, after all a dynamic two-way process between a person and their environment.

We should consider “helping by not helping” because:

1. The more we do for them, the less they learn to do
    for themselves.
2. The easier life is for them, the less able they are to cope
    when challenges arise.
3. The faster their solutions come, the less they tend to take
    time searching for answers.
4. The more resources we give them, the less resourceful
    they become.

Keep in mind that the adversity should be developmentally appropriate, as children do better when not exposed to high levels of risk or adversity. So if they can struggle and meet the challenge, great – help by not helping. But don’t stand back while kids struggle with no pathway forward.

The point is that because many young people seem fragile and ready to give up at the first sign of setback, we tend to rescue them. As well as helping those in their time of greatest need, I suggest we focus on proactively equipping all students with tools to ride out challenges and manage their wellbeing. We need to build resilience before the stressful events- like building immunity to a disease with a vaccination. That’s why wellbeing practices are so important. So what skills do they need?

The ingredients of resilience

The American Psychological Association (2014) suggests ‘10 Ways to Build Resilience’, which are:

  • to maintain good relationships with close family members, friends and others
  • to avoid seeing crises or stressful events as unbearable problems
  • to accept circumstances that cannot be changed
  • to develop realistic goals and move towards them
  • to take decisive actions in adverse situations
  • to look for opportunities of self-discovery after a struggle with loss
  • to develop self-confidence
  • to keep a long-term perspective and consider the stressful event in a broader context
  • to maintain a hopeful outlook, expecting good things and visualising what is wished
  • to take care of one's mind and body, exercising regularly, paying attention to one's own needs and feelings

Working Bee report

The first School working bee for 2019 took place last Sunday on a very warm afternoon. Syl Longo has generously taken on the role of Working Bee Co-ordinator and did a great job overseeing the range of tasks undertaken. Our playground sandpits were entirely refreshed with new sand and toys (our thanks to Sue Wuttke for organising these), hedges and shrubbery were clipped and tidied and Mrs Bellio was assisted in completing a list of odd jobs inside and outside of the school buildings. Along with the adult helpers, we had many enthusiastic St Anne’s students helping and having a bit of fun too! All up, the work was completed in 2 hours and all present enjoyed a refreshing icey pole and/or cool drink when we finished (thanks Mr James). Thanks go to the following 12 families for their participation: Longo, Dunell, Gledden, Lewin, Muccio, Hodgkinson, Clancy, Vendramini, Mazzacca, Troise, Gleeson and Haasbroek. Every contribution is valued and we encourage all school families to participate in the 3 remaining working bees for the year. As can be seen, it is not an overly onerous commitment but it makes a real difference for our children.

St Anne's Family Night

Over 70 new and returning members of the School Community attended the St Anne's Family Night last Thursday at MCC Kew. The children enjoyed dinner together, followed by barefoot bowling (of sorts) and some very fun games and activities. Meanwhile, the parents and friends present enjoyed some drinks and a night off cooking, meeting new members of our School community and renewing acquaintances with old. The night was once again expertly organised by Sam Lovrich – thanks Sam! It continues to be a really good way of launching the school year and we look forward to doing it again in 2020.

Parish Picnic Volunteers- much help still needed!

As has been advertised over the past few weeks our annual Parish Picnic is being hosted by St Anne’s this week on Sunday 3 March from 11.30-2.30pm. Our Glee Club will be performing, lunch and drinks are provided for all and there will be a giant slide and jumping castle for the kids. For a couple of weeks we have been asking for helpers to volunteer for set-up and clean-up and to man the Popcorn stand and BBQ. Each shift on these food stands is just 30 minutes but at the time of writing only 5 families have signed up as volunteer helpers. It is appreciated it is a busy time of year but is this really good enough when we have around 90 school families and St Anne’s is only required to host the picnic every second year??? This is a really enjoyable event and the children always have a ball so please, make what is really just a minor commitment by signing up to one of the rosters on the link in this Newsletter.

We are also seeking artistically inclined parents and St Anne’s student alumni who can do face-painting. If you can help please register on volunteersignup.org/CLDPC. Any questions please contact samanthalovrich@yahoo.com.au

Thanks
Sam
