December 2019 PEPANZ welcomes new Chief Executive John Carnegie has started as PEPANZ's new Chief Executive and says he is excited at taking on the important leadership role for the sector. "I’ll be strongly representing the interests of the sector as we create prosperity through energy, and at the same time help lead us through change as we transition to a lower emissions world." Major reform to Crown Minerals Act A discussion document released by the Government on the Crown Minerals Act signals potentially the biggest reforms to petroleum legislation in 30 years. The proposed changes cover nearly every area of how the upstream oil and gas sector operate and include:

PEPANZ's annual Year in Review publication was also launched at the event, outlining some of the highlights from a busy year for the industry. Jadestone Energy joins PEPANZJadestone Energy is the newest PEPANZ member following the announcement of their plans to enter New Zealand. The Singapore-based company will be purchasing OMV's 69% stake in the Maari field. The deal is now subject to Government approval and expected to be completed in the second half of next year. Industry champions recognised PEPANZ Chair and Todd Energy CEO Joanna Breare has been honoured with the 2019 Taranaki Mayoral Award for Business Excellence. The award was presented at the TSB Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards last month for her outstanding contribution to the region. In addition to her PEPANZ and Todd Energy roles, Joanna is also Chair of the Lead Group for the Taranaki 2050 Roadmap for the transition to a low carbon economy and serves on the Board of Venture Taranaki Trust. Also recognised has been OMV's Amelia Rentzios, who is Plant Production Manager at the Māui Production Station. Amelia was one of three finalists in the Young Executive category at the DeloitteNZ Top 200 Business Awards this month. IEA highlights future role of natural gas Global demand for natural gas as a lower carbon energy source will continue to grow in coming decades, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s new World Energy Outlook 2019. Each of the three scenarios in the report show increasing demand for natural gas over coming decades, with a 36% increase by 2040 predicted under the ‘Stated Policies’ scenario. Even the ‘Sustainable Development’ scenario predicts that natural gas will become the world’s single biggest energy source in the 2030s. It also highlights the growing demand for natural gas in Asia with consumption in China growing 33% over the last two years.
