Please visit this link to learn about a most important topic regarding Mass. Click www.catholic-link.org/2016/11/07/children-mass-sundays  to read and to enjoy a great video!

Reminder to Sacred Heart parishioners: The blessing of homes is traditional at the beginning of New Year. I will be happy to make a visit along with a picture of the Sacred Heart to place in your home. Please call the rectory for scheduling.

Family Christmas ornaments

As we prepare for the Advent season, we also prepare our Family Christmas Trees at Sacred Heart School. There will be trees on each floor of the school decorated with one ornament from each school family.

If you are new to SHES or haven't yet sent an ornament to represent your family, please send us one. The ornament can be bought or homemade. Please put your family's name on the ornament, along with the year your child(ren) were first enrolled at Sacred Heart School.

We use the ornaments from year to year to remember all who have been part of the school family over time. The children love to put their family ornament on the tree and proudly show it to their friends.

Notes from the Office

Kindergarten and Preschool Registration

We are registering new students for the 2017-2018 school year.  If you have younger children whom you are planning to send to SHES next year, you should start the process now.  Kindergarten and both preschools currently have openings for next year, but it would be very disappointing to find out too late that the classes are full.  Registration forms are available at the school office or on our website.

Lunch Monitor tips (Taken from “Parent Lunch Duty Guidelines”)

Indoor Recess on Bad Weather Days
As cold and snowy weather approaches, the children will be having indoor recess more frequently.  When supervising the children, parents should:

  • walk from room to room
  • monitor children in their classrooms.

Students should:

  • be seated at desks or on the floor
  • use indoor voices while engaged in activities, i.e. games, cards, projects, etc.
  • stay in their homerooms
  • use restrooms or visit lockers only with permission of supervising teachers and parents
  • have no food or drink in classrooms

Tuition Payment Due

If you pay your tuition by semester, your second payment is due January 15, 2017.  Contact Laura Abinader  at the Parish Tuition Office for your current balance.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place on Sunday, December 11th during the 9:30 a.m. Mass for children in grades K - 4. Children are dismissed to the rectory library to listen to the Word of God with the daily readings on an age appropriate level. A special blessing of the Infant Jesus will take place during this time. Children are asked to bring the Infant Jesus from their family's Nativity set with them to the rectory library. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Christmas Eve procession with 2nd Grade

It has been a long standing tradition at Sacred Heart for children in 2nd Grade who are preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion to participate in Christmas Eve Mass.

The 2nd Grade will participate in the entrance procession at 4:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve. Each child, accompanied by one parent, will carry candles ahead of the celebrant for Mass. The celebrant then processes with the Christ Child to the Nativity located in the Lady’s Chapel. After the procession, children and parents will join their families in church.

Please note there is no reserved seating for families who participate in the procession. Children are asked to arrive at the back of the church on December 24th no later than 3:30 p.m. Please keep in mind that many people attend this Mass so parking/seating will be difficult if you arrive late.

If your child will participate, you are asked to RSVP no later than December 15th to Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Family Rosary

Pope Francis has asked us to celebrate as a community a year dedicated to mercy. This Holy Year of Mercy is a time to help us rediscover the Church’s mission to bear witness to God’s love and the Gospel message.

We learn of divine mercy through Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. In order to assist families to always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it daily, families are encouraged to come together to pray the rosary in church once a month prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Recitation begins at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday, December 11th. What a beautiful way for parents to lead their children (even the littlest ones!) to grow in love of our Lord through the eyes of Mary.

Thanksgiving All School Liturgy

The Sacred Heart Students in grades 1-8 came together for a celebration of giving.  Each grade was asked to bring in a particular food item for our Thanksgiving All School Liturgy to donate to East End Cooperative Ministry Food Bank.  The response and participation was a wonderful example of the Corporal Works of Mercy that our school  performs.  The baskets were overflowing with stuffing, rice, macaroni & cheese, corn, cranberry sauce, yams, green beans and mashed potatoes. Thank you to all the students and their families for being so generous.

Service learning at Sacred Heart

During the first few months of school, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders have been busy with several service projects.

October
Treats from Our Hearts

The students celebrated Halloween with a day of "Trunk or Treat". Bags of candy were donated from each child in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.  The parent volunteers transformed the trunks of their cars into a wide range of Halloween displays.  The children walked with their classmates to each trunk and gathered their treats.  When they returned to the classrooms they decorated paper pumpkins with pockets and placed three or four pieces of candy to donate to the EECM members who would stop at the pantry on Halloween.

November
Desserts from Our Hearts

The students participated in a Thanksgiving project called "Desserts from our Hearts."  Each child in 3rd grade donated a box of cake mix.  The 2nd graders donated a container of icing.  And the 1st graders  donated a package of cup cake liners.  The children were grouped in teams of three, one from every grade level.  They created a Dessert bag with a turkey and feathers.  Using the donated items the children filled the bag and created a turkey out of the brown bags.  The turkeys showed off the children's creativity and gratitude.  The dessert turkey bags were donated to the EECM Food Pantry in plenty of time for Thanksgiving shopping and for holiday baking.

December
Prayers from Our Hearts

As the children prepare their hearts and hands to be ready for Jesus during this first two weeks of Advent, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders made prayer cards for the parishioners of Sacred Heart Church.

Christian Leadership Team update

On October 28, Sacred Heart School’s Christian Leadership Team (formerly Student Council) sponsored its first middle school dance for the school year. For the past two years, the students have made it a tradition to make donations to a particular charity at each dance. For this first dance, the Christian Leadership Team chose the recipient of the donation to be the Haitian hurricane victims at our sister school, St. Antoine’s, in Fondwa.

The students proudly and generously donated $200 to help with the food shortage created by Hurricane Matthew. Food shortage is currently impacting student lunches at the school and orphanage. The Sisters who serve the children lost their home and everything they had in Fondwa. The team is happy to help them in a small way.

The Christian Leadership Team also visited the City Council Building in downtown Pittsburgh on November 29. The middle school students were invited to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag at the beginning of the City Council Meeting. They then introduced themselves to the Council members.

Prior to the City Council meeting, the fifteen team members, Mrs. Lang, and Miss Tarasovic were given a tour of the City Council Building. The students were excited about this opportunity to learn about our local government and, also, to proudly represent Sacred Heart School in the Pittsburgh community.

EmpowHER self defense clinic a success

Thank you to everyone who participated in Girl Scout Troop 52491's EmpowHER Self Defense Clinic in October.  With over 50 participants, Josh Ryer and his team from Ryer Martial Arts Academy did a great job.  We learned how to build confidence, improve physical fitness, practiced self-defense concepts, and most importantly had FUN!

We are happy to report that we raised enough money from the event to sponsor a Girl for one year of schooling at our sister school, St. Antoine in Fondwa, Haiti.

Christmas Tournament volunteers needed

The annual Christmas Tournament sponsored by the SHAA will be held December 26-30. We are still looking for teams so spread the word.

In addition, PLEASE volunteer as much as you are able! The Tournament is the SHAA ‘s biggest fundraiser and the proceeds benefit ALL sports. So, if you can make some hot food or bake some cookies to sell, THANK YOU! If you can spare an afternoon or evening to work the clock, door or concession stand, THANK YOU!

Families with children playing in the tournament are asked to work at least TWO shifts, but more would be welcome and appreciated! If your child plays a sport, but is not playing in the tournament, we ask for at least ONE shift. More would be great!

If you have smaller children or children that don’t participate in sports, but are able to donate some time, we would love to have you! If you are interested in helping, contact Michele Cromer at mcromer@gtnlaw.com or Jennifer McPeak at jlmcpeak@burnswhite.com.  Watch for the email with the sign-up genius that will be circulated in December and sign up for whatever you can.

Ski club

The Sacred Heart Ski Club is gearing up for its 2nd season!  Ski club is offered to children in grades 6-8.  Three ski trips will be planned to Hidden Valley Ski Resort.

The deadline to sign up for the Ski Club is December 5th.  Forms with additional information were sent home with 6-8th grade students.  There are only nine (9) spots left for new skiers.  If you are a returning skier PLEASE send in your forms.

If you would like more details, contact Amy Volpe at jaisvolpe@gmail.com. Thank you!

December food: Rice

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect rice to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Christian Leadership Team members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
