New Subject in Semester 2: ABPL90369 Architecture as Spectacle

This subject considers the production of architecture in the age of commodification of the 20th and early 21st century. It reflects on how such a world increasingly conceives, produces and consumes architectural design as a form of spectacle.

Case studies to be explored include the signatory works of 21st century’s star architects and their branding of the global cities, national pavilions at the world exposition series, museum architecture, arts spaces, and the commercial architecture of shopping malls, flagship stores of international brands, tourist sites and entertainment centres.

This subject is for students who are interested in reflecting on how architecture interacts with broader cultural production of our time such as othering, commodification, branding and imaging.

Smoke-Free Campus

This is a friendly reminder that staff, students and visitors are prohibited from smoking on University property, except for those areas established as designated smoking areas.

What will happen if I smoke on campus outside a designated smoking area?

You may be politely reminded of the University's policy and the location of the designated smoking area. Those persistently breaching the policy may be subject to action through:

- student discipline procedures
- staff misconduct procedures
- a request to leave the campus

Public Lecture - Climate is Culture

David Buckland will narrate 14 years of Cape Farewell's ambition to place climate centre stage. Using the notion of expedition as a model to interrogate the future, Buckland will showcase some of the art produced by over 320 artists who have risen to the climate challenge and visioned, through their creative endeavour, why we must engage in building transformative, dynamic and sustainable societies.
