BACON IS SIZZLINGBacon is currently exploding on menus with many chefs finding new ways to incorporate the crowd-pleaser. Examples include Checkers and Rally’s new Mother Cruncher sandwich featuring candied bacon, Dunkin’ has launched Cherrywood-smoked Bacon and Avocado Toast and Sonic Drive-in has added a Bacon Jam Cheeseburger to fuel the bacon obsession. In retail, Sainsbury's are offering Pigs in Beach Towels for the BBQ season- a twist on the popular Christmas staple after selling around 20 million of last year. From 16th May, The British Sandwich Association will be focusing on some of the innovative sandwich ideas from this years’ Sandwich Designer of the Year Awards. According to Lumina Intelligence, 33% of customers are bored of making the same lunches at home so it’s a perfect time for some inspiration for the lunchtime classic. 3. CELEBRATING THE TACO MOONTaco Bell has launched its first global marketing campaign and is giving out free tacos across 20 markets on May 4th to celebrate what they’re calling the “Taco Moon” crescent phase of the moon. The promotion will be supported by various digital campaigns in each of the participating markets including the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and the United States. The campaign also encourages downloads of the Taco Bell app as customers can avail of greater rewards, further building brand awareness. 4. BURGER KING'S PLANT-BASED BURGERSBurger King has added two new burgers to its menu. The new vegan ‘chicken’ burger, called the Vegan Royale, features a crispy coated, plant-based “chicken” fillet topped with lettuce and vegan mayonnaise in a toasted sesame seed bun. The Plant-based Whopper has all the usual fixings but replaces the beef patty to suit more customer needs. 5. FUTURE FOOD UPDATEThe Food People revealed their latest findings on consumer behaviour as the hospitality sector gears up for eager-to-return customers. They report on six main insights to be important to consumers right now including sustainability from sourcing to wastage to packaging, appeal for meal kits and the safe return to dining out again. 6. JOLLIBEE REDESIGN FOR EXPERIENCEFilipino chain, Jollibee, has announced plans for European expansion to build upon its near 1,500 estate worldwide. The redesign will first be rolled out in London followed by six other locations throughout the UK before the end of 2021. The new locations cater to social experiences for younger generations with a comfortable communal design featuring traditional Southeast Asian artwork. 7. COOK'S LUXURY FROZEN MEALSThe premium feel-good brand, COOK, has increased its capacity of hand-prepared meals by 50%. The company's aim is to make everything look and taste homemade which it brings to the UK frozen ready meal sector. COOK has seen record annual revenues year on year and plans to double sales within 5 years with a recent acquisition of a new facility and investment in freezing technologies. 8. SATISFYING MEAT ALTERNATIVESThe value of the plant-based market reached $1.4 billion in 2020 as sales increased 45% from $962 million in 2019. As the meat alternative market continues to grow, if from a low base, consumers are seeking more variety and options. The stakes are high for manufacturers to find solutions that satisfy in taste and texture especially whole muscle cuts like chicken breast, steak and fish fillets. The nostalgia trend has impacted meat sales, particularly tinned meat such as corned beef, with data from Kantar showing that sales rose by £9.8 million over the past year. Experts predict that post-Covid, food products with strong health credentials will prosper and customers may turn to functional options filled with health and wellness-boosting properties.
