Cairns Entertainment Precinct

Early works will begin on the Cairns Entertainment Precinct site in the coming weeks as contractors carry out investigative works on White’s Shed.

Local Cairns contractor Richard Field Constructions is in the process of employing an extra apprentice to work on the project taking the total workforce for the contract to more than 20 people.

However, don’t expect to see a lot of activity as you drive past White’s Shed on Wharf Street.

Most of the investigative work will be going on inside the shed with concrete flooring being removed and internal scaffolding erected to give builders access to the elaborate timber framing of the heritage listed building.

The investigative works will determine the exact condition of the building. This will allow architects to finalise detailed plans for the refurbishment of the shed in keeping with its heritage requirements.

White’s Shed was built in the 1920’s as a sugar storage and handling facility and is one of few industrial buildings from that era still standing in Cairns.

Its solid timber frame represents a significant chapter in the history of the modernisation of the Cairns Port and the bulk handling of sugar.

An online directory to help Cairns locals and visitors find everything from the local doctor’s surgery to employment services or sporting groups was launched at Cairns Regional Council on Monday.

The online Community Services Directory is hosted on Council’s website as a resource to assist both residents and visitors, businesses, services and organisations find each other within the region.

Inclusion on the database is free, and we would like to see this resource become a one-stop shop for anyone looking for service providers in the local area.

If you provide a service to the community, you are invited to add your organisation's details.

City Centre Master Plan

Abbott Street median tree planting

Streetscape improvement works will be undertaken on Abbott Street (between Aplin and Shields streets) as part of the Cairns City Centre Master Plan.

This project is the first step towards providing a green city centre and will result in an improved visual amenity for the street and additional shade for parked vehicles.

The work will include the removal of existing trees and replanting of the site with six fig trees into irrigated, landscaped median islands. Minor configuration changes to median parking will result in an additional two car parking spaces.

Construction works are programmed to start on Monday 26 March 2012, and it is anticipated that it will take approximately three weeks to complete the project (weather permitting). During works, expect temporary parking disruptions, noise and dust however Council officers will attempt to keep these disruptions to a minimum.

All works are expected to be complete by late April 2012, weather permitting.

To find out more go to www.cairns.qld.gov.au (Community Engagement page), call (07) 4044 3326 or email feedback@cairns.qld.gov.au before Friday 16 March 2012.
