Early works will begin on the Cairns Entertainment Precinct site in the coming weeks as contractors carry out investigative works on White’s Shed.
Local Cairns contractor Richard Field Constructions is in the process of employing an extra apprentice to work on the project taking the total workforce for the contract to more than 20 people.
However, don’t expect to see a lot of activity as you drive past White’s Shed on Wharf Street.
Most of the investigative work will be going on inside the shed with concrete flooring being removed and internal scaffolding erected to give builders access to the elaborate timber framing of the heritage listed building.
The investigative works will determine the exact condition of the building. This will allow architects to finalise detailed plans for the refurbishment of the shed in keeping with its heritage requirements.
White’s Shed was built in the 1920’s as a sugar storage and handling facility and is one of few industrial buildings from that era still standing in Cairns.
Its solid timber frame represents a significant chapter in the history of the modernisation of the Cairns Port and the bulk handling of sugar.
