1. US to test for ASF, Canada agrees trade contingency plans

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced plans to implement an African Swine Fever (ASF) surveillance program. As part of this plan, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will work with the swine industry, the states, and veterinary diagnostic laboratories to test for ASF.

2. Dutch ruling shows need for clearer labelling of artificial flavours: ‘Careful distinction will have to be made’

The Dutch advertising standards watchdog has reaffirmed its ruling that the labelling of FrieslandCampina's Optimel Vanille Vla is misleading for consumers because it does not communicate the use of artifical flavours clearly enough on pack.

3. Cat TB cases linked to raw pet food; people also sick

Raw pet food has been linked to an outbreak of feline tuberculosis that has infected dozens of cats and two people in the U.K. One hundred people and 90 felines have been referred for tests, researchers have told U.K. media.

4. Multi-state Salmonella outbreaks linked to backyard poultry

The Centers for Disease Control and public health officials in several states are investigating multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections linked to contact with live poultry, such as chicks and ducklings, in backyard flocks.

5. Botulism cases linked to hummus in Argentina

Two cases of food borne botulism linked to hummus have been confirmed by Argentinian health authorities. The National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Devices reported that an investigation confirmed the botulism cases and results of an epidemiological survey determined illness was associated with a hummus product.

6. California’s backyard poultry flocks falling dead from highly contagious virus

Virulent Newcastle disease generally is not a human food safety threat, which is lucky because the poultry sickness is spreading like wildfire in California’s backyard flocks. Virulent Newcastle disease was formerly known as exotic Newcastle disease.

7. Authorities close the net on suspected crime organization; 30 tons of fish seized

Authorities from six European countries have dismantled an alleged criminal organization that sold fish unfit for consumption.Fish was stored in, and transported to, several EU countries in improper and unsanitary conditions, and then sold to Romanian companies.
