Port Metro Vancouver announces acceleration of reform to the Port’s Truck Licensing System

Port Metro Vancouver is Canada’s largest port. The refusal of container truckers to work with the federal and provincial governments and Port Metro Vancouver to effect real change in the trucking industry is hurting Canadian families and impacting our international trade reputation, all of which is having a dramatic impact on our economy.

We share the concerns of all Canadians who want a quick end to the work stoppage by truckers.  Disruption is affecting families here in BC and across the nation.  We agree that truckers deserve fair compensation, and recognize this has been a difficult time for all involved.  We are taking this situation very seriously and are doing everything within our jurisdictional power to get the port running back to full operations.

In alignment with the previously announced 14-point Joint Action Plan, we are today announcing acceleration of the plan to reform PMV’s Truck Licensing System, also known as TLS.  We will be informing TLS License and Permit holders of this today.

We will not be renewing Licenses or Permits in the current systems that expire.  In particular, today we will be notifying 100-150 of those with Licenses and Permits that expire at the end of March and the end of April that their TLS Licences and Permits will not be renewed.

We will be introducing the new licensing system over the coming weeks.

This is an accelerated reform that comes after months of consultation with industry, trucking companies and federal and provincial governments through our Smart Fleet program, and has benefitted from the work of Vince Ready and his discussions with truck operators.

We expect everyone with a TLS License or Permit to be at work tomorrow. As we implement the new system, one factor we will consider is whether drivers have been at work as of tomorrow or not.
