From the colour and excitement of the Grand Parade to the Superhero sounds of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the 2018 Cairns Festival features a blockbuster line-up to suit every taste. Other highlights include City Lights Mix Tape at the Cairns City Library, Spectrum pop-up street party, Sunday Funday on the Esplanade, Suburban Satellites program, Humans by Circa and Carnival on Collins. With so many fantastic events and performances to enjoy, download the full program from the official Cairns Festival website to plan ahead. Free parking for Grand ParadeEnjoy the sights and sounds of the Cairns Festival Grand Parade without worrying about whether you've got enough change for parking. As a thank-you to everyone supporting the parade, parking in the CBD will be free of charge from 3pm. The free parking applies to on-street parking and all Council-operated off-street carparks. Regulations relating to restricted parking bays and zones will still apply. The Grand Parade starts at the new time of 5pm and will travel along the Esplanade from Minnie Street to Spence Street. Fireworks will follow at 7.30pm.
New meeting structureA more efficient approach to Council decision-making has been adopted, with Council to hold two Ordinary Meetings each month – being on the second and fourth week of the month. The additional Ordinary Meeting will replace the Committee Meetings that have previously been held on the second and third week of each month. This new format is expected to eliminate delays and duplication of process. The next meeting of Council will be an Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 12 September at 9am. Colourful approach to flood safetyYear 2 student Farhan Mohammed has won Council's Flood Safety Colouring Competition. He is pictured with Deputy Mayor Terry James and his St Therese's School classmate Yuan Horino, whose entry was Highly Commended. Nearly 1000 entries were received, with the winner taking home a brand new Samsung Tablet. Farhan celebrated his win by giving a talk to his classmates on how to prepare for floods and other natural disasters.
TNQ Innovation AwardsEntries for the Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards (TNQIA) have been extended until 14 September. Prizes include $2,000 cash for Major Award winners and $1,000 cash for Specialty and Inspiration Award winners. Winners will also receive a customised prize package including items such as advertising, team building experiences, mentoring and professional services. Compete on the ReefRegistrations are open for the 2019 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games, which will be held in Cairns on 23-26 May 2019.
