Obstructive Sleep Apnea Can Affect Your Sex Life

If you or your partner has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you're familiar with symptoms: Snoring, sometimes so loud it wakes everyone in the house.  Waking up during the night gasping for air. Fatigue and sleepiness throughout the day.

When a person has OSA, his or her airway passage becomes blocked, causing the person to stop breathing for short spans of time.  This happens over and over during the night. Sometimes, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device, like the one in the above photo, can help.

OSA can take a toll on sexual health for both men and women. Recently, Chinese researchers looked at 9 medical studies on OSA and sexual dysfunction. They found that men with OSA had an 82% increased risk for erectile dysfunction. And women with OSA were twice as likely to have sexual problems compared to those without OSA.

Sexual Problems Common in Returning Veterans

Scientists have discovered that many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have sexual problems.

In their study sample of 247 men and women, almost 18% tested positive for sexual dysfunction.

Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and being female were also associated with sexual problems.
