From the Desk of President Maria Thompson August 2018
Welcome Back!Dear Coppin Family & Friends – I want to thank everyone for helping to successfully launch our new academic year, after what was hopefully a restful and enjoyable summer! We were thrilled to welcome more than 300 new incoming freshmen who are now the Class of 2022. It is our intention and commitment to fully support our new students – and all of our returning students – as you make the most of the rich academic offerings at Coppin, as well as the diverse extra-curricular programs that make Coppin such a unique and welcoming community. Each and every member of our faculty and staff are ready and eager to guide and support you as you work to achieve your ambitions. Recently, I communicated that I will be taking an additional few weeks to fully recover from the health challenge I was required to deal with over the past several months. In case you missed it, you can read my full letter to the Coppin Community HERE. Be assured, I will be staying in close communication and, in the meantime, our Provost, Dr. Leontye Lewis, and Steve Danik, VP of Administration and Finance, will be overseeing the day-to-day coordination of campus administration. I am grateful to them for taking on this additional responsibility. Welcome back one and all! I look forward to making the most of the new academic year and all that together we will accomplish!
Founded in 1900, Coppin State now has a 118-year history of creating access to education through accessibility. Affordability - as well as value - remains among the top reason our students and alumni recommend Coppin State to others. Two new reports prominently rank Coppin State for just those reasons.
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Take Me Out to the Crowd. . ." Making the most of one of Baltimore’s prized assets - and in keeping with our “Make the City Your Campus” campaign - I was delighted last week to join with more than 500 of our students and alumni for Coppin State University Night at Camden Yards. This was not only a wonderful evening with our home team Orioles, but a first for me in having the honor to throw out the first pitch! While no one offered me a contract afterwards, I’m pleased to report that my pitch did not embarrass the Coppin family, the result of some considerable practice in the days before. In case you missed it, here’s a LINK. You can also view a selection of photos from our night at Camden Yards on Coppin's Facebook Page. Congratulations, to Adam Jones on his 2nd career grand slam! Coppin Alumni Recognized for GivingIn recognition of a lifetime of giving back, alumni James Camphor and Florine Camphor will be honored during a special luncheon coinciding with National Philanthropy Day. Mr. and Mrs. Camphor are the recipients of this year's Community Impact Award which will be bestowed in November. The award is given to individuals that have made a significant and measurable impact through personal giving, volunteerism, board service or civic service. Mr. and Mrs. Camphor are long-time benefactors of Coppin State and other organizations that have a positive impact in our community. We are so grateful for all that they have made possible here at Coppin as we celebrate their lasting impact on the community they love and have spent a lifetime to make better. Coppin State Students Perform at the Baltimore Book Festival I am excited to announce that for the third year in a row, students of author and Coppin professor Dr. Kathleen Hellen will take the stage at the annual Baltimore Book Festival, which takes place at the Inner Harbor on Sunday, September. 30, 2018. C. Martin "Gonzo" Beck (pictured) and Melissa Jackson will be among the participants representing 10 colleges and universities at this year's University Writers' Program. Their reading will take place between 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Ivy Bookshop installation. The Baltimore Book Festival features hundreds of author appearances and book signings, 100+ exhibitors and booksellers, non-stop readings on multiple stages, cooking demos by celebrity chefs, poetry readings and workshops, panel discussions, walking tours, storytellers and hands-on projects for kids, street theater, live music, and a delicious variety of food, beer and wine.
A very special thank-you to Dr. Hellen for ensuring that our students are featured during this important and cherished literary festival of Baltimore. Click HERE for more information about Baltimore Bookfest.
Coppin State Student- Athletes Increase Community Service Goal Starting with The Maryland Food BankIn addition to being stars on the court as well as in the classroom, our student-athletes have just set a goal to perform 1000 hours of community service. Student-athletes across 12 of our women's and men's sports teams represent one of Coppin’s core values - namely, giving back to the community and making a difference in the lives of others. Their first service project will be at the Maryland Food Bank, Saturday, September 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Maryland Food Bank battles hunger and food insecurity for all in need across our State and here in Baltimore. I am so proud of our students’ commitment to the community and for representing Coppin so well in this way. Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Open to All Where has the summer gone? September has always been a somewhat bittersweet month; marking both the beginning of the school year and the end of summer. One highly-anticipated aspect of the summer months, however, can still be enjoyed! The last night of our annual and free Alumni Summer Concert Series will take place on Thursday, September 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the Library Quad. This is the last chance this year to bring a friend and a lawn chair and enjoy some wonderful music performed by some very talented area artists under the stars, listening to jazz, rhythm and blues, cover bands, and neo-soul artists. Come and enjoy! Stay Connected |
