EXCLUSIVE: NHS England invites diabetes funding bids

An application process to access £44m to improve diabetes care has been opened by NHS England.

Funding is available for structured education, improving the achievement of the NICE recommended treatment targets, introducing new or expanding multi-disciplinary footcare teams (MDFTs) as well as setting up or expanding diabetes inpatient specialist nursing services (DISNs). DKA and SGLT-2 statement issued

The increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes from SGLT-2 inhibitors has been highlighted by a leading body of diabetes consultants. To read more, click here.

Scotland’s £10m insulin pump and CGM fund

A £10m fund to provide more insulin pumps to people with diabetes living in Scotland has been announced.

It will also be used to fund more continuous glucose monitoring equipment as part of a five-year package of funding announced by the Scottish government to help improve care for people with the condition in the country.

Diabetes champion sought for parkrun

An organisation which stages hundreds of 5k runs across the UK every weekend is recruiting a diabetes champion.

The voluntary role would help parkrun UK work on plans to increase awareness of the Saturday and Sunday morning runs for people living with diabetes.

Positive results from artificial cell insulin release therapy

Artificial cells which release insulin have successfully been placed under the skin and worked for the first time.

If the cell-based treatment gets approval from clinical trials then it might end up replacing daily insulin injections, researchers said. To read more, click here.

Mealtime insulin administration concerns highlighted by survey

A third of people with diabetes are risking serious complications by not taking mealtime insulin as recommended by their healthcare professional, a survey has found.

One in five people also regularly miss their insulin dose before lunch, according to the survey of 200 people living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes needing mealtime insulin to control their glucose levels. To read more, click here.

Two apps aimed at increasing knowledge around the problems that can occur in the diabetic foot have just been launched.

Fat and sugar ban in children’s advertising

The promotion of high fat, salt or sugar will be banned in children’s advertising, it has been announced today.

Tough new rules banning the advertising of high fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) food or drink products in children’s media will come into effect on July 1, 2017, the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) has said. To read more, click here.
