We hope that you are having a restful break. The new year presents an opportunity to plan and make actionable goals. Setting goals for the year can provide you with insight, direction, and a sense of motivation throughout the year. By setting goals for yourself, you are providing yourself with a target to aim for.
At Oakland Promise we set SMART goals. SMART goals are a tool to structure and track your goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
A SMART goal incorporates all of these criteria to help focus your efforts and increase the chances of achieving that goal. Check out our Setting SMART Goals Guide below.

Mentor-Scholar Activity #4
Reminder to complete the 4th required Mentor-Scholar activity emailed to you on 12/1. This activity is focused on building your LinkedIn profile with the help of your Mentor. It requires that you successfully log into your Students Rising Above (SRA) account.
This activity includes 3 Parts:
- Pre-work (SRA Resources ~ 45 min)
- Main Activity (LinkedIn Profile Development ~ 60 min)
- Feedback Form (5 min)
The LinkedIn Activity and Feedback Form are due by January 31st, at 11:59 pm. If you have any questions, please email advising@oaklandpromise.org.

January is National Mentoring Month and we are excited to highlight and recognize our awesome Oakland Promise Mentors! Throughout the month, we will be sharing your Mentor shout-outs and affirmations on social media - please celebrate with us!

Black Excellence Grant
Oakland Promise is launching our Black Excellence Grant to support Oakland Black/African American Scholars in achieving their post-secondary goals. Oakland Promise believes in an Oakland community without barriers to equity and hope this grant can provide additional financial support to our Black youth.
OP Youth Organizer Grant
Apply to our Oakland Promise Youth Organizer Grant! . This grant is open to any youth in Oakland engaged in activism in service of the Black and/or underserved communities of color, or to youth-led nonprofit organizations or initiatives. There is no age requirement.
